Chapter 7 - the videos that started too late
The video showed Clara crying.
It did not show Dr. Ward explaining the brace.
It did not show Clara choosing to try.
It did not show her asking to stop or the adults stopping immediately.
The clip began when fear crossed the child’s face and ended before she smiled.
Seline had obtained the footage through an old hospital-family account that should have been revoked.
Adrien had allowed her access months earlier.
Grace closed the account and preserved the login record.
Seline’s custody petition included twelve more videos.
Clara throwing a therapy band.
Clara screaming at Seline.
Clara refusing medication.
Clara striking a tray from a table.
Without context, they appeared alarming.
Detective Mara found the complete versions on Seline’s memory cards.
In the first, Seline stretched the therapy band around Clara’s injured ankle until the child begged her to stop.
In the second, she threatened to remove Clara’s photograph of Evelyn.
In the third, Clara refused the orange “vitamin.”
In the fourth, Seline placed the tray beyond her reach, then ordered her to stand without support.
Every reaction began after sustained pressure.
Seline’s edited recordings transformed resistance into illness.
Grace showed the complete files to the child advocate.
“She anticipated that Clara might speak,” Grace said. “The videos were designed to make any disclosure look like manipulation.”
Adrien recognized the method because Seline had used it on him too.
Whenever he questioned a missed appointment, she sent a clip of Clara crying.
Whenever he suggested returning early, she warned that sudden changes would worsen the child’s anxiety.
She did not need to forbid him from coming home.
She made his presence sound harmful.
The custody hearing was scheduled within forty-eight hours.
Seline appeared publicly in modest clothing rather than the emerald gowns and designer dresses she usually wore. Her attorney described her as the only consistent mother Clara had known since Evelyn’s death.
Adrien did not attack the claim emotionally.
He presented records.
Seventeen canceled appointments.
Altered crutches.
Unused braces.
Sedative tablets.
Hidden ownership in Greenwood.
Edited videos.
Seline’s attorney focused on the initial foyer incident.
“Mr. Mercer returned in an agitated condition and immediately accused his wife without understanding the therapeutic exercise.”
Adrien answered calmly.
“I watched her kick the crutch.”
“You were across the hall.”
“Yes.”
“Could Clara have moved it?”
“No.”
“Are you a medical professional?”
“No.”
“Then how can you determine whether the exercise was appropriate?”
“Because no legitimate exercise begins with disabling a child’s support and allowing her to fall.”
The complete audio played.
Seline’s sentence echoed through the courtroom.
If you fall hard enough today, the doctor will finally sign the placement papers.
The judge turned toward her attorney.
“Do you have an explanation?”
He requested a recess.
Seline whispered urgently beside him.
For the first time, her controlled expression disappeared in public.
Clara did not testify in the courtroom.
Her recorded interview was played privately for the judge with both legal teams present.
She described the forced standing, medication, threats, and staged videos.
When asked why she had not told Adrien sooner, she said:
“Dad believed clean papers. I was always messy when I tried to tell.”
Adrien heard the sentence outside the courtroom.
He lowered his head.
The judge suspended Seline’s medical authority and barred all contact with Clara. Greenwood’s placement request was canceled. Adrien retained temporary custody under child-advocate supervision.
The court also froze Clara’s trust and ordered a full forensic audit.
Seline left through a side door.
Before entering her attorney’s car, she turned toward Adrien.
“You think she will love you for choosing her now?”
Adrien did not answer.
This was not a contest for Clara’s loyalty.
It was an obligation that should never have required a courtroom.
That night, the audit committee found a draft lease inside Seline’s financial account.
It transferred the Mercer mansion to Vale Health Holdings once Clara entered residential care.
