Chapter 2

Amanda had not planned to return early.
Her flight from Boston was supposed to land the next morning.
Richard believed he had one more night.
Vivian believed she had one more night.
Brooke believed she had time to settle herself into the house as if she had always belonged there.
Ethan was the only one who did not know there was a plan.
He only knew his mother had been gone three days, his father had stopped smiling at him, and Grandma Vivian had started calling him “that boy” instead of Ethan.
Amanda’s trip ended early when a client meeting collapsed before lunch.
She texted Richard from the airport.
No answer.
She called.
No answer.
Then she called Vivian.
Straight to voicemail.
That was unusual.
Vivian loved answering calls when Amanda was away because it gave her a chance to sound generous.
“Everything is fine here.”
“Richard is handling the house.”
“Ethan is learning not to be so attached.”
Amanda hated that last sentence.
But she had told herself it was only Vivian being cold.
Not cruel.
Now, standing inside the mansion with Ethan shaking in her arms, Amanda understood she had softened the wrong warning signs.
The baby in Vivian’s arms stirred.
Brooke stepped closer to Richard, one hand hovering near her own waist as if she had forgotten she was not the wife in the room.
Amanda noticed everything.
The baby bag near the sofa.
The small pink bottle on the side table.
Brooke’s overnight tote half-hidden behind the armchair.
Richard’s confidence.
Vivian’s contempt.
Ethan’s fear.
This was not a misunderstanding.
This was a replacement staged before Amanda’s suitcase even crossed the threshold.
Ethan pressed his face into her shoulder.
“I tried to stand up,” he whispered.
Amanda’s hand tightened around his back.
Richard said, “Do not turn this into a scene.”
Amanda looked at him slowly.
“A scene?”
Vivian adjusted the baby blanket.
“He was throwing a tantrum.”
Ethan shook his head against Amanda’s neck.
Amanda did not ask him to defend himself.
Not then.
Children should not have to argue their pain in front of adults who caused it.
She turned toward the security camera again.
The light blinked steadily.
Good.
