Chapter 7

Richard became angry when fear arrived.
That was his pattern.
He stepped closer, pointing at Amanda with the same finger he had aimed at Ethan.
“You do not get to turn my family against me in my own house.”
Amanda adjusted Ethan on her hip, careful of his tired body.
“Your house?”
The question was soft.
Dangerous.
Richard realized too late he had said it.
Vivian looked between them.
“What does she mean?”
Richard said nothing.
Amanda did not explain.
Not fully.
Not yet.
She simply walked toward the entry table, picked up her suitcase handle, and set it upright with one hand while holding Ethan with the other.
The action was small.
Controlled.
Domestic.
It terrified Richard more than shouting would have.
“Where are you going?” he demanded.
“To Ethan’s room.”
“No.”
Amanda stopped.
Slowly turned.
“No?”
Richard swallowed.
He looked toward the security camera.
Then the smart-lock panel.
Then his vibrating phone.
He was calculating again.
Could he block her?
Could he claim she was unstable?
Could he make Brooke cry?
Could Vivian hold Chloe and create enough emotional noise to bury what had happened?
Amanda saw each thought move across his face.
She said, “Think carefully.”
Vivian snapped, “Do not threaten my son.”
Amanda looked at her.
“I am done warning your son.”
That silenced even Vivian.
Ethan whispered, “Mommy, can we go?”
Amanda kissed his forehead.
“Yes.”
Richard moved half a step.
The smart-lock panel chimed again.
This time, the front door lock shifted audibly.
Not opening.
Not closing.
Confirming.
Brooke flinched.
Richard stared at the panel.
His confidence thinned visibly.
Amanda began walking toward the staircase.
Not rushing.
Not fleeing.
