Downstairs, the mansion sounded different.
The same chandelier.
Same marble.
Same white sofas.
Same carved fireplace.
But the air had changed.
Before, Richard had filled the house with certainty.
Now every sound belonged to Amanda.
Her footsteps.
Ethan’s uneven breathing.
The soft chime of the security system.

“You’re going to ruin everything over a tantrum?”
Amanda’s voice stayed even.
“Not his tantrum.”
Richard went still.
Vivian whispered, “Amanda, please.”

Not insult.
Not correction.
Fear had given her manners.
Amanda looked at her mother-in-law.
“You told my child to stay down.”
Vivian’s lips trembled.
“He was being difficult.”
“He is four.”
No one spoke.
Amanda shifted Ethan slightly.
He was heavy now, but she welcomed the weight.
Proof.
Life.
Her son.
Richard’s phone buzzed again and again.
He finally answered, turning away.
No one heard the full conversation.
Only fragments.
“What do you mean suspended?”
“No, don’t touch the access list.”
“She can’t—”
He stopped.
