Chapter 4

The argument began over Lily’s gift.

Emily had saved for weeks to buy Lily a small wooden dollhouse from a local craftsman. It was hand-painted, simple, beautiful, and exactly what Lily wanted.

Margaret bought Lily a tablet.

A very expensive one.

When Lily opened the dollhouse first, she squealed and threw her arms around Emily.

“Mommy, it’s perfect!”

Emily laughed through tears.

That was the happiest moment of the night.

Margaret ruined it in under ten seconds.

“Well,” she said, lifting the tablet box, “this one will last longer than painted wood.”

Lily looked confused.

Emily’s smile faded.

I said, “Mom, she loves the dollhouse.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“I know what children need.”

Emily said quietly, “She’s allowed to enjoy both.”

Vanessa swirled her wine.

“Of course. Sentimental gifts have their charm.”

Emily looked at her.

“Is everything funny to you?”

The room stopped.

Margaret straightened.

“Do not speak to Vanessa like that.”

I stood halfway.

“Mom, enough.”

But enough came too late.

Margaret turned on Emily with years of contempt finally finding open air.

“You come into this family with your coupons, your secondhand habits, your little victim face, and now you think you can insult my guests?”

Emily’s voice shook.

“I have tried to respect you.”

“Respect?” Margaret laughed. “You married up and never learned gratitude.”

Lily started crying.

I moved toward my daughter.

Emily stepped in front of Margaret and said, “Do not say that in front of my child.”

That was when Margaret slapped her.

Not because Emily was wrong.

Because Emily had finally drawn a line in a room Margaret believed belonged entirely to her.
