Chapter 7

Vanessa tried to save the room.

Not Emily.

Not Lily.

The room.

“Daniel,” she said softly, “everyone is emotional. Don’t make a permanent decision over one bad moment.”

I turned to her.

“One bad moment?”

She looked toward Margaret, then back at me.

“You know what I mean.”

“No. I don’t.”

Her confidence faltered.

I took one step closer, still holding Lily’s coat.

“You insulted my wife in front of my daughter.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“I was joking.”

“Then explain the joke to Lily.”

The silence that followed was answer enough.

Lily hid behind Emily’s skirt.

Emily put one hand over our daughter’s shoulder, the other still near her cheek.

Margaret said, “Stop interrogating Vanessa.”

I looked at my mother.

“Why?”

“She is a guest.”

“Emily is my wife.”

“She has turned you against me.”

“No.”

I felt the truth settle in my chest.

“You did.”

Margaret’s face went pale.

For years, she had called Emily divisive.

Sensitive.

Manipulative.

But Emily was not the one forcing a choice.

Margaret was.

Every insult had asked me to choose.

Every dinner had asked me to choose.

Every time she made Emily smaller and watched whether I would object, she asked me to choose.

Christmas night was only the first time I answered correctly.

I wrapped my scarf around Lily’s neck.

My daughter whispered, “Are we going to Grandma’s again?”

No one breathed.

I looked at Margaret.

Then at Lily.

“Not until it’s safe.”

Margaret’s eyes filled, but the tears looked more like anger than sorrow.

“You would keep my granddaughter from me?”

May you like

I said, “You taught her to fear you tonight.”
