Chapter 6

Margaret had always believed I would come back to her side.

No matter what happened.

No matter how cruel she became.

No matter how much Emily endured.

That was the foundation of her power.

I had confirmed it for years.

When she insulted Emily’s background, I changed the subject.

When she criticized our parenting, I called it concern.

When she excluded Emily from family decisions, I asked Emily to be patient.

When she compared Emily to Vanessa, I pretended not to hear.

But Christmas night gave me no room left to hide.

My wife stood humiliated in a room full of people.

My child clung to me, asking if she was bad.

My mother waited for me to restore order.

And I finally understood that “order” had always meant Emily swallowing pain so Margaret could feel respected.

I walked to the staircase and picked up our overnight bag.

Emily’s eyes widened.

“Daniel…”

“We’re leaving.”

Margaret laughed once, sharp and disbelieving.

“You are not leaving on Christmas night.”

I turned.

“Yes, we are.”

“This is my home.”

“That does not make it safe.”

Vanessa set her glass down carefully.

She had lost interest in smiling.

Margaret stepped toward me.

“Daniel, do not embarrass me.”

I looked at Emily’s cheek.

Then at Lily’s tearful face.

“You did that yourself.”

The sentence landed harder than shouting.

Margaret’s expression cracked.

She was not used to my words arriving without apology.

Emily pulled Lily’s coat from the chair.

Her hands shook.

I took it from her gently and helped Lily into it.

My mother watched each small motion as if I were committing betrayal.

Maybe I was.

But not against my wife.

Against the role Margaret had assigned me before I was old enough to refuse it.
