Chapter 22 - THE BOARD OFFERS VIOLETTA A WAY TO STAY

The foundation did not have to fire Violetta entirely.

The special committee proposed:

She resign as executive director.

No operational control.

Remain eligible for a nonvoting family-advisory role after two years, subject to compliance and counseling.

No archive access outside normal policy.

No authority over staff.

She could still attend public events after legal restrictions ended.

Keep salary through transition period? She would receive contractual severance under employment agreement.

Some relatives were furious.

“Severance?”

“Yes.”

“She hid the founder’s letter.”

“She also has an employment contract.”

Morality does not erase contracts automatically.

Then Violetta’s lawyer asked for a stronger role:

Voting board seat after one year.

The committee refused automatic restoration.

She would have to be nominated and approved like anyone else.

Violetta rejected the proposal initially.

Why?

“Mother built this with me.”

Maybe.

But legal founder was Mother.

Board existed.

Institution did not belong to the person with the most memories.

Then her attorney warned:

“If you force a hearing, everything becomes public record.”

Violetta said:

“Then let it.”

Pride again.

The final governance hearing was scheduled.

Not a criminal trial.

An internal removal and fiduciary review with outside counsel and independent directors.

Still consequential.

Her career.

Her position.

The role she had built after Mother died.

At the same time, my diversion review approached completion.

No one entered the climax clean.

Good.
