Chapter 26 - WHAT ENDS AND WHAT DOES NOT
Violetta resigned as executive director.
The board accepted.
She received the contractual severance due under her employment agreement.
No bonus.
No honorary executive title.
A professional director took over permanently after an open search.
The board added:
Two independent community directors.
One family director elected every three years.
Anatole stepped down as chair at year-end.
The new chair was independent.
No automatic seat for me.
No automatic seat for Violetta.
The family still had representation.
Not operational inheritance.
Violetta could apply for a nonvoting advisory role after two years if legal restrictions ended and the board believed it appropriate.
No promise.
Then the child-battery case.
Her misdemeanor plea stood.
Probation.
Counseling.
Restitution.
No unsupervised minors during probation.
Initial no-contact with Primrose.
Later contact only if Primrose wanted and her therapist supported.
Then me.
I completed diversion.
Anger-management.
Restitution.
No new offense.
My misdemeanor assault charge was dismissed after successful completion.
The slap remained part of what happened even if no conviction remained.
Then the foundation email.
No legal sanction beyond governance censure.
The donor loss remained.
I did not buy my way out.
The project adapted.
Then the vase.
The foundation retained several major fragments.
One rim section.
One painted panel.
Base fragments.
The rest, too small or unstable for display, remained cataloged in conservation storage.
No fake reconstruction.
No dramatic gold repair.
The pedestal was moved out of the walking path.
A small label eventually went into the collection database:
Elena Corvane porcelain vase, damaged accidentally during private family event.
No Primrose’s name.
She did not become part of an artifact record forever because she was five and bumped furniture.
Good.
Then Mother’s letter.
Original came to me legally as recipient.
I donated a restricted archival copy.
The original stayed in a document box at home.
Not framed.
Not displayed.
Not turned into a shrine.
I read it less often.
That was progress.
Then Violetta.
She completed the first months of counseling.
Sent no second apology to Primrose until Paige said contact could be offered.
When asked whether she wanted to receive one, Primrose said:
“Maybe later.”
So later.
No pressure.
Then one afternoon, Anatole asked Primrose:
“Do you want to help me choose a new vase for the dining room?”
I almost objected.
Primrose answered first.
“No.”
Anatole nodded.
“Fair.”
Then she said:
“Put flowers.”
“What?”
“No vase. Just flowers on table.”
Anatole laughed.
“We can manage that.”
So the east dining room stayed without a tall porcelain object.
Not as punishment.
Not as memorial.
