Chapter 21 - The first meeting
Oliver was six months old.
The meeting happened in Dr. Naomi Price’s family room.
Margaret arrived ten minutes early.
She did not bring gifts.
Oliver sat on my lap.
He stared at her.
Then at ceiling fan.
Priorities.
Margaret said:
“Hello, Oliver.”
No reaching.
No tears demanding comfort.
Good.
After five minutes, he smiled.
At the therapist.
Not Margaret.
She laughed softly.
Then he dropped his teething ring.
Margaret instinctively leaned.
Stopped.
Looked at me.
“May I pick it up?”
I nodded.
Tiny.
Everything was tiny now.
She picked it up.
Gave it to Daniel, not directly to baby.
Respectful.
Then Oliver started fussing.
Margaret said:
“He’s tired.”
My body tightened.
Was she telling me what my child needed?
Then she corrected herself.
“Or maybe something else. You know him.”
That correction mattered.
I fed him.
Meeting ended at twenty-two minutes.
Margaret stood.
“Thank you.”
No request for next time.
Outside, Daniel asked:
“How do you feel?”
“Tired.”
Same answer I had used after childbirth.
But different.
Then Margaret waited three weeks before asking whether another visit would be okay.
We agreed.
Thirty minutes.
Then again.
No rapid progression.
No solo contact.
No “Grandma gets him Saturday.”
Behavior accumulated.
Then one afternoon, Margaret made a mistake.
She said:
“You should put cereal in his bottle. Daniel slept through the night at this age.”
I stared.
She immediately said:
“That was unsolicited advice.”
“Yes.”
“Sorry.”
No argument.

I raised two children.

You’re too sensitive.
She stopped.
Progress is often boring corrections.
Then Rebecca visited from Seattle.
First time family together since birth.
She hugged me.
“I’m sorry I didn’t understand what Mom was doing.”
“You couldn’t.”
“I could’ve told Daniel she canceled the nurse.”
“Yes.”
Specific responsibility.
Then:
“I thought it was normal Mom.”
