Chapter 23 - The photograph is destroyed

Margaret’s attorney sent confirmation.
Not legally necessary.
She had destroyed the printed postpartum photograph after counsel confirmed no preservation requirement remained.
Why involve attorney?
Because Margaret was learning not to improvise around evidence.
Good.
Then she returned one more thing.
A folder.
The original family management agreement.
Unsigned.
Marked:
VOID.
I told her through counsel:
“Keep your own records.”
She did.
No symbolic burning.
No bonfire.
Just archive.
Then Daniel asked Eleanor whether the old financial POA draft could ever be used.
“No. It was never signed.”
Done.
No ghost document.
Then I did something harder.
I invited Margaret to our house.
Not overnight.
Not alone.
Sunday afternoon.
Daniel nearly dropped a bottle.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
Good answer.
We prepared.
One hour.
Living room only.
No entering bedroom.
No childcare task.
No kitchen control.
Then Margaret arrived carrying nothing.
No casserole.
No grocery bags.
Thank God.
She sat on the sofa.
The same sofa.
My body remembered before my mind.
I stood near doorway.
Naomi had warned:
Trauma can attach to rooms.
I breathed.
Margaret noticed.
“Should I leave?”
I almost said yes.
Then:
“No. Sit.”
Choice.
Oliver crawled toward the coffee table.
Daniel followed.
Margaret stayed seated.
Then the baby turned toward her.
Crawled two feet.
Stopped.
She looked at me.
I nodded.
She held out one finger.
Oliver grabbed it.
Her face collapsed.
Silent tears.
No dramatic:
My grandson.
No claiming.
Just finger.
After ten minutes, she let go first.
That mattered.
Then she noticed our weekly cleaner’s supply basket near hall.
Old Margaret might have said:
“You still pay someone?”
New Margaret said nothing.
I almost wanted her to.
Testing people is its own form of control.
I let silence be silence.
Visit ended at fifty-eight minutes.
She left.
No request for key.
No mention of spare room.
No assumption of next Sunday.
Then Daniel locked the door.
Not because she was dangerous now.
Habit.
May you like
I watched.
Did not check twice.
