Chapter 12 - I turn down the promotion

I did not quit my job.

I did not become a stay-at-home father out of guilt.

That would have been dramatic and financially foolish.

I turned down the travel-heavy promotion.

My boss, Victor Lane, was unhappy.

“You’ve been working toward this for four years.”

“I know.”

“Is this because of the family case?”

“Yes.”

He leaned back.

“Do you want me to tell you not to make career decisions while emotional?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then I proposed:

Keep current director title.

Salary increase to $178,000 tied to expanded local portfolio.

Maximum:

Three overnights per month without advance agreement.

Emergency exceptions.

More remote administrative work.

Victor said:

“You’re negotiating against yourself.”

“Maybe.”

Then:

“I’m also retaining institutional knowledge you don’t want to replace.”

He smiled.

“There he is.”

We negotiated.

Final:

$181,000.

Two to four overnights per month depending quarter.

Thirty-day visibility.

No surprise week-long travel except genuine emergency.

That was sustainable.

Then childcare.

After-school program three days.

Maribel one dinner weekly.

Thomas and his wife Claire Reed as backup overnight caregivers.

No single grandparent controlling everything.

Tamsin complained:

“I like Grandma’s mashed potatoes better.”

Complicated grief.

She could miss food and fear food from the same person.

Dr. Price said:

“That’s normal.”

May you like

I hated normal.

Normal had become complicated.
