Chapter 6 - Food was becoming evidence

Child welfare investigator Dana Morrison visited.

She asked about food first because Tamsin had been slapped while asking for more.

Tamsin’s pediatric records showed:

Weight around 50th percentile.

Height around 55th.

Steady growth.

No malnutrition.

No diagnosed eating disorder.

No food allergy.

No medical reason for restrictive portions.

Good.

Then Isolde’s meal logs.

Obtained later through family-court discovery.

She recorded:

Serving sizes.

Requests for seconds.

Snacks.

Crying.

Statements about hunger.

Examples:

June 8: Asked for second serving before others finished. Boundary enforced. Cried 11 min.

June 14: Requested snack 37 min after dinner. Gideon allowed.

June 22: Complained “still hungry” after full meal. Emotional escalation when denied dessert.

Then videos.

Video one:

Tamsin crying beside untouched peas.

Isolde caption:

Refuses balanced meal, demands preferred food.

Full recording later showed:

Tamsin ate chicken and potatoes.

Asked for more chicken.

Isolde refused until peas finished.

Tamsin cried.

Not exactly caption.

Video two:

Tamsin opening pantry.

Isolde:

“You already ate.”

Tamsin:

“I’m hungry.”

Isolde recorded.

No violence.

Still.

Then one clip bothered Dana most.

Isolde served Tamsin:

Half a sandwich.

Apple slices.

Milk.

Tamsin finished.

Asked:

“Can I have the other half?”

Isolde:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you need to learn enough.”

Then she started recording before Tamsin cried.

That was not evidence of a spontaneous problem.

It was a test.

Then me.

Had I noticed?

No.

Because I often arrived after dinner.

There.

My work mattered.

Isolde’s cruelty did not erase my absence.

I told Dana:

“I should have seen more.”

She said:

“Guilt is not a safety plan.”

I almost laughed.

Then:

“What changes now?”

I adjusted my schedule immediately.

No Isolde childcare.

School after-care.

Maribel as emergency contact.

My friend Thomas Reed and his wife as backup overnight caregivers during necessary travel.

I also told Northline:

Promotion decision postponed.

My boss was not thrilled.

May you like

Neither was I.

But Tamsin’s life could not be built around an argument I hadn’t resolved.
