Chapter 24 - Ruby tells Vanessa what stayed

The call lasted twelve minutes.

No judge required now.

I consented.

Vanessa agreed to therapeutic conditions.

Ruby was ten? Timeline perhaps 4 years later. We need avoid too many years. Hmm from 6 to perhaps 9-10 after 3 years prison + follow-up. That's okay but user dislikes decades; few years acceptable. Could keep Ruby 9 by compressing sentence actual time 2.5 years. Let's not state age here.

Ruby sat beside Dr. Carver.

I remained out of frame.

Vanessa appeared.

“Hi, Ruby.”

“Hi.”

Silence.

Then Ruby lifted her protective glasses.

“My eye still doesn’t see right.”

Vanessa cried.

Ruby said:

“Don’t cry.”

Dr. Carver intervened gently.

“Ruby, Vanessa can manage her own feelings.”

Good.

Ruby continued.

“I can see light. Not faces.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“You made that.”

“Yes.”

“Doctor says forever.”

Vanessa’s face broke.

“Yes.”

Then Ruby said:

“I wanted you to know because jail ended.”

There.

“But eye didn’t.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

Fair.

Vanessa:

“You’re right.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Ruby:

“I know.”

Not forgiveness.

Knowledge.

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

Vanessa should not have asked.

Dr. Carver stopped.

“That question puts responsibility on Ruby. Vanessa, rephrase if needed.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I’m sorry. You don’t have to tell me how to feel.”

Good correction.

Ruby said:

“I’m still mad.”

“You can be.”

Then:

“Why Grandma name?”

Vanessa explained simply.

“Uncle Colin’s company needed money. Grandma said no to using her house. I signed her name anyway because I thought I could put the money back before it mattered.”

“That stealing?”

“It was fraud.”

Adult word.

Ruby:

“You lie.”

“Yes.”

“You push.”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“I don’t want another call now.”

Vanessa:

“Okay.”

The call ended.

Ruby asked for ice cream.

We got ice cream.

No emotional epilogue.

Then I emailed Vanessa through agreed channel:

Thank you for respecting the session.

She replied:

Thank you for allowing it.

Nothing else.

Then Diane asked whether she could mention Vanessa to Ruby.

Previously we avoided.

I said:

“If Ruby brings her up.”

Good.

Walter same.

No adults lobbying.

Then Ruby’s school project:

Family tree.

There it was again.

She included:

Mom.

Grandma Diane.

Grandpa Walter.

Aunt Vanessa.

Placed Vanessa on edge.

Teacher did not ask why.

Good.

Then medical.

Eye pressure stable.

No new surgery planned.

Permanent condition managed.

No miracle.

Then one final corporate/financial remnant:

Walter received notice that Crowe Residential’s final dissolution had completed.

No liabilities connected to him.

He forwarded to me.

I said:

“You don’t need to send me these anymore.”

He replied:

“Right.”

File closed.

Really.

Then Ruby wanted to visit my parents’ old kitchen.

Impossible.

House belonged to strangers.

She asked:

“Can see picture?”

I said no.

Not from evidence.

Why reopen?

May you like

She accepted.

We did not need to return to the scene to prove we survived it.
