Chapter 25 - Vanessa comes back to town

Vanessa returned for Diane’s surgery.

Not life-threatening.

Knee replacement.

My mother wanted both daughters informed.

Fine.

Would we be at hospital together?

Possibly.

I told Ruby:

“You can stay with Grandpa Walter.”

She asked:

“Why?”

“Because Aunt Vanessa will be at the hospital.”

“I can see her.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

I thought.

Then:

“Do you want to?”

“Maybe just hi.”

We planned.

Public hospital waiting room.

Not private.

No surprise.

Vanessa arrived.

Saw Ruby.

Stopped ten feet away.

Ruby walked toward her.

I stayed beside.

“Hi.”

“Hi, Ruby.”

No hug.

Then Ruby said:

“Grandma okay?”

“Yes. Surgery went well.”

“Good.”

Silence.

Then:

“I got new glasses.”

“They look nice.”

Ruby rolled eyes.

“I hate them.”

Vanessa smiled carefully.

“I hated mine too.”

Human.

Then Diane’s nurse called family.

Interaction ended.

No trauma.

No reconciliation.

Later Ruby said:

“She looks normal.”

That sentence.

Of course.

People who do terrible things usually look normal.

I said:

“She is normal in many ways.”

“Bad people normal?”

“People can do very bad things and still have ordinary parts.”

She did not love ambiguity.

Neither did I.

Then Diane recovered.

Vanessa stayed one week.

I did not visit Diane while Vanessa was at townhouse unless schedules separated.

Not because court.

Because boundary.

Diane accepted.

Then Vanessa left town.

No request.

Then Walter asked:

“Do you forgive her?”

“No.”

“Do you think you will?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

He no longer told me family must heal.

Good.

Then Ruby’s civil/medical account annual review.

Enough funds projected for known needs through majority, assuming normal insurance.

No fortune.

No stress.

Then my own career.

I had reduced travel after injury.

Not because I became afraid to leave Ruby forever.

Because priorities shifted.

Still worked.

Still used babysitters.

Diane sometimes.

Professional sitter others.

No overcorrection.

Then one evening Ruby said:

“Can Aunt Vanessa come to my birthday?”

I froze.

“Do you want her there?”

“Yes. But not sleep.”

Interesting.

I contacted Dr. Carver.

Prepared.

Vanessa received invitation through me.

Conditions:

One hour.

Public trampoline? Eye risk. Better art studio party.

No gifts beyond ordinary small item.

No private conversation unless Ruby initiates.

No photos without permission.

Vanessa replied:

May you like

I understand.

The birthday would test whether contact could exist without turning into ownership.
