Chapter 1

My Son Unplugged My Oxygen Machine to Charge His Phone—Then My Smartwatch Livestreamed His Inheritance Threat to My Lawyers.
Arthur Bennett was dying, but his son was the one in a hurry.
The private hospice suite glowed with Christmas lights. Wrapped gifts sat beneath a small tree near the nighttime window. Warm lamps softened the room, but nothing softened Marcus Bennett’s face.
Arthur lay beneath a cream blanket, oxygen tubing beneath his nose, his left wrist wearing a black smartwatch.
Marcus stood by the wall outlet, holding his new phone and charging cable.
Then he pulled the oxygen machine’s plug free.
The machine gave a warning tone.
Arthur’s breathing tightened.
Marcus shoved his charger into the outlet and looked back at his father.
“Die faster, old man. My Aspen flight leaves in an hour.”
Arthur’s fingers tightened against the blanket.
Marcus dropped an estate-transfer document and pen across his chest.
“Sign this, and I’ll turn the oxygen back on.”
Arthur did not reach for the pen.
Beneath the blanket, his thumb pressed the side button on his smartwatch.
A subtle vibration touched his wrist.
Arthur looked at Marcus.
“You always were impatient.”
Marcus frowned.
Then the hospice door unlocked.
Evelyn Shaw, Arthur’s estate attorney, stepped in holding Arthur’s second phone. Two officers followed behind her.
Evelyn’s voice was calm and sharp.
“Step away from the machine, Marcus.”
Marcus dropped the papers.
One officer reconnected the oxygen.
Arthur took a deeper breath.
Marcus stared at the phone, then the smartwatch.
“What did you do?”
Arthur turned his wrist slightly, showing the pulsing watch.
He had not changed the will.
Not yet.

But Marcus had just shown everyone why he should never touch it.
