Chapter 10

No death happened in the hospice room.

No arrest was completed.

No court ruling was shown.

No will was formally changed.

No final inheritance outcome was revealed beneath the Christmas lights.

The confrontation ended with Arthur Bennett breathing again through the clear oxygen cannula, weak but alert beneath the cream blanket.

The oxygen machine was plugged back in.

The infusion pump remained steady.

The black charging cable lay useless near the wall outlet.

Marcus stood several steps away from the bed, expensive coat still perfect, face no longer confident.

Evelyn Shaw held Arthur’s second phone and leather legal folder.

Two officers remained inside the room, calm and professional, keeping Marcus away from the equipment.

The estate-transfer document lay unsigned on the blanket.

The silver pen had rolled near the edge of the bed.

Arthur turned his left wrist slightly.

The smartwatch still pulsed.

Marcus stared at it.

“What did you do?”

Arthur did not raise his voice.

He barely had one.

But his eyes were clear.

He had not beaten his son with strength.

He had not needed to.

He had let Marcus speak.

Let him unplug the machine.

Let him threaten the signature.

Let him show exactly what kind of son stood beside his dying father on Christmas Eve.

The livestream had already reached Evelyn.

The evidence had already left the room.

And Marcus finally understood the inheritance he wanted so badly was no longer the most important thing he had lost.

His father had seen him clearly.
