Chapter 9

Evelyn stepped closer to Arthur’s bed.

“Arthur, do you want him removed from the room?”

Marcus snapped, “You don’t get to decide that.”

Arthur lifted one weak hand.

Everyone paused.

That stillness belonged to him.

Not Marcus.

Not Evelyn.

Not the officers.

Arthur looked at his son for a long moment.

He could have said yes.

He could have ordered Marcus out immediately.

He could have let the officers finish what they had not yet begun.

But the requested ending had not arrived.

No completed arrest.

No final inheritance outcome.

No will formally changed.

Only the confrontation.

Only the truth made visible.

Arthur spoke carefully.

“I want him away from the machine.”

One officer moved between Marcus and the wall outlet.

Evelyn nodded.

“Done.”

Marcus laughed once, bitter and afraid.

“You think this changes everything?”

Arthur’s eyes stayed on him.

“No.”

Marcus seemed relieved for half a second.

Then Arthur continued.

“It reveals everything.”

The room went quiet.

Evelyn closed the leather folder.

The documents stayed unread.

The will remained unchanged on-screen.

The final outcome waited somewhere beyond the hospice suite.

But Marcus’s face showed he understood the damage.

Not legal damage yet.

Human damage.
