Chapter 12 - Daniel attacks Thomas
Daniel’s investigators found Thomas.
That enraged me.
Not because hiring investigators is inherently illegal.
Because they questioned people at the veterans’ site.
Asked about drinking.
Mental health.
Arrests.
His daughter.
Debt.
Then a financial blog published:
WHITMORE FOUNDER BEFRIENDS HOMELESS EX-SOLDIER AFTER HEART ATTACK.
Anonymous source questioned “elderly billionaire’s vulnerability.”
Thomas came to my condominium.
Threw the article on the table.
“You did this?”
“No.”
“Your sons?”
“Probably.”
“I’m out.”
“Thomas.”
“I did not ask to become content.”
“I know.”
“My daughter got a call from a reporter.”
That stopped me.
“I’m sorry.”
“Are you?”
“Yes.”
“What are you going to do?”
I wanted to say:
Destroy Daniel.
Instead:
“Have Evelyn send notices. Offer counsel to your daughter if she wants it. Stop involving you unless you choose.”
Thomas stared.
Then:
“Good.”
He left.
Evelyn sent cease-and-desist letters where claims became false or harassing.
Not threats to journalists merely for reporting facts.
Thomas declined private security.
His daughter received guidance.
The story faded.

It made me more certain family control had become dangerous.
