Chapter 24 - Marcus apologizes without asking for anything

Marcus came to my condominium one year and eight months after the heart attack.

No lawyer.

No folder.

I let him in.

He sat.

“Dad, I’m not here about the trust.”

“Good.”

“I know you won’t believe that.”

“I believe you might last ten minutes.”

He smiled sadly.

Then:

“I watched the whole video again.”

“Why?”

“Therapist told me to stop remembering it from inside my own head.”

Interesting.

“What did you see?”

“You on the ground.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel stepping on your hand.”

“Yes.”

“Me checking the building entrance.”

“Yes.”

“I told myself I was checking for help.”

“What were you checking?”

He swallowed.

“Who was watching.”

There.

That was the truth.

“I was embarrassed by how it looked.”

“How what looked?”

“My father collapsed. The press thought you were broke. Daniel was furious. I wanted to leave before cameras got the scene.”

I breathed.

Pain from memory is physical even when the artery healed.

Marcus continued:

“I thought image mattered for thirty seconds more than you did.”

No excuses.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

Did not ask forgiveness.

Did not mention inheritance.

Forty-three minutes later, he stood to leave.

I almost stopped him.

Then did.

“Marcus.”

He turned.

“Your grandchildren trust remains.”

His face tightened.

“I said I’m not here about money.”

“I know.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because I don’t want you leaving thinking love has to be guessed from silence.”

May you like

That was my work.

Not only theirs.
