Chapter 10 - DAD DID NOT DISINHERIT ME
The executed amendment matched the draft in structure.
Not every number.
Enough.
Dad did not disinherit me.
He did not leave everything to Sophronia.
He did not leave everything to Aurelia.
He did not create a secret fortune.
He did something far more ordinary.
He made the estate harder to manipulate.
The executed amendment removed Sophronia as successor trustee and appointed North Coast Fiduciary Services as independent trustee.
Reason stated neutrally:
To reduce family conflict and ensure consistent administration.
Then grandchildren.
Sixty thousand dollars in separate education-and-health trusts for Aurelia.
Sixty thousand for Clara.
Equal.
Professional trustee.
Parents could request qualifying distributions.
Neither child could be used as proof of who Grandpa loved more.
Then remainder.
Fifty percent to me.
Fifty percent to Sophronia.
Subject to the advancement schedule.
My old $40,000 home loan:
Paid in full.
Not charged.
Sophronia’s advancement total in the final signed schedule:
$162,000.
Not because Dad secretly hated her.
Because the transfers existed.
$72,000 to refinance debt after divorce.
$45,000 toward a failed boutique partnership.
$25,000 for legal fees.
$20,000 emergency home repair and tax balance.
Each transfer had documentation.
Three were signed by Sophronia as:
Advance against eventual trust share unless later forgiven in writing.
Dad never forgave them in writing.
The amendment did not take $162,000 away from her immediately.
It required the trustee to account for those advances when equalizing the final remainder.
If the estate after other gifts contained, for example, $1.2 million for the sibling shares, the trustee would apply the adjustment formula specified in the document.
No need guess final numbers until accounting.
Then the workshop.
Specific gifts:
A set of hand planes and Dad’s measuring tools to me.
Our mother’s bracelet and silver service to Sophronia.
Jewelry box to Clara.
Rocking horse to Aurelia.
Then a sentence Dad added to the memorandum:
The rocking horse is not to be appraised as an heirloom asset. It is a toy I made for my granddaughter. Let the child ride it.
I laughed and cried at the same time.
Then the key.
Dad’s notebook explained:
He hid the cabinet key in the horse after Sophronia repeatedly asked where the executed amendment was stored.
Not because he wanted Aurelia to solve an inheritance puzzle.
He wrote:
Aurelia will keep the horse because she likes the horse. That makes it safer than my desk drawer.
Practical.
Then the most damaging part for Sophronia.
A letter in the cabinet.
Not a legal amendment.
A factual note to Miles Trent.
Dad wrote:
Sophronia knows I executed the third amendment. She disagrees because I removed her as trustee and confirmed her prior advances. I have told her not to remove or destroy any estate papers. I do not believe she will steal from me, but I do believe she will try to “fix” things she considers unfair.
There.
Not thief.
Controller.
Dad knew the difference.
Then:
If the key cannot be found after my death, drill the cabinet. I am hiding it only because I am tired of arguments, not because the papers should remain secret from probate.
That destroyed any romantic treasure theory.
The key mattered only because Sophronia did not want the cabinet opened before she could control the narrative.
Then the question:
Had she actually hidden the amendment after Dad died?
Evidence said she knew it existed.
She had looked for the key.
But the cabinet itself remained sealed.
She had not destroyed anything.
What she had done was tell family repeatedly:
The old plan controls.
Dad left me in charge.
Dacre has already used his share.
None of those statements were accurate after the amendment.
Her Christmas threat:
“You just lost your inheritance.”
Legally meaningless.
The central secret was not that Dad had secretly chosen me over her.
He had refused to choose.
He had split the remainder equally.
Protected both granddaughters equally.
Then neutralized one source of control:

That was what she had been searching for the key to fight.
