Chapter 11 - SOPHRONIA SAYS DAD WAS PUNISHING HER

Sophronia did not dispute the signatures.
Her strategy changed.
Dad was punishing her.
The advancement schedule was vindictive.
Removing her as trustee was a response to one argument.
The amendment should be invalidated for undue influence or lack of capacity.
Who influenced him?
According to Sophronia:
Me.
Problem:
I did not know the amendment existed.
Then Naomi.
Did she influence?
She drafted it as attorney.
That is normal.
Then Miles.
He was not involved until probate.
Then bank witnesses.
No family present.
Capacity challenge weakened.
Sophronia’s lawyer shifted again.
Dad lacked complete information about the advances.
Some should have been gifts.
Maybe.
That could affect accounting without invalidating the whole amendment.
Then Sophronia produced texts.
DAD:
Don’t worry about paying me back right now.
Regarding the $72,000.
Could “don’t worry right now” equal gift forgiveness?
Not automatically.
Then another:
DAD:
Family helps family.
Again.
Context.
But signed advancement acknowledgment said otherwise.
Court would weigh.
Then $20,000 home repair.
No signed acknowledgment.
Dad’s advancement schedule alone identified it.
Could be challenged.
Good.
Not every number became sacred because Dad typed it.
Accounting needed evidence.
Then emotional argument.
“You don’t know what it’s like to have Dad keep a ledger of every time you fail.”
I looked at Sophronia across mediation table.
For once, I did not answer immediately.
Maybe I did know.
Dad kept receipts.
Notes.
Repayment records.
He was an accountant even after retirement.
That could feel cold.
Then she said:
“He gave you time.”
“What?”
“He fixed things with you. Taught Aurelia woodworking. Had Saturday breakfast. With me, every mistake became a number.”
There.
The resentment was bigger than money.
Dad and I had grown closer after Aurelia was born.
Sophronia and Dad had grown more administrative.
Bills.
Care appointments.
Documents.
She did more practical work during his last illness than I did.
That was true.
Then Dad removed her as trustee.
From her perspective:
She did the work.
I got the affection.
Then he charged her advances.
I got my old loan marked repaid.
Different facts.
Emotionally explosive.
Understanding that did not make the slap disappear.
Or the key search.
Or the lies.
May you like
But it made her human again.
I needed that if this story was going to end with something other than ashes.
