Chapter 21 - THE HORSE COMES HOME

Joel returned the rocking horse in February.

The scratched runner repaired.

Saddle corner rebuilt with matching maple.

He had refused to erase every mark.

“Original wood should still look original.”

I agreed.

Aurelia inspected it like a museum curator.

Then:

“Where key hole?”

Joel showed her.

The sliding cap had been stabilized but not sealed.

“Can put secret?”

She whispered.

“You can put anything small.”

She ran to her room.

Returned with a yellow bead.

Dropped it inside.

Closed the cap.

I smiled.

No legal document.

No inheritance.

A bead.

Then Clara visited.

She saw the repaired horse.

“Can I ride?”

Aurelia nodded.

“One turn.”

Clara climbed on.

Rocked too hard.

Aurelia shouted:

“Slow!”

Clara slowed.

Then switched.

No adult mediated fairness.

No one compared the jewelry box.

No one asked which gift was worth more.

Then Aurelia touched her cheek where the bruise had long disappeared.

“Aunt Sophronia coming?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“I don’t know.”

She thought.

“Clara can.”

“Yes.”

Good enough.

Then Dr. Elise Rowan, Aurelia’s child therapist, told me something important.

“Aurelia is not primarily afraid of Sophronia now.”

“What is she afraid of?”

“That family objects can disappear when adults get angry.”

The horse.

Presents.

Grandpa’s things.

So we stopped making heirlooms sacred.

Aurelia played with the horse.

Clara opened the jewelry box.

I used Dad’s hand plane on an actual piece of wood instead of mounting it on a wall.

May you like

Objects returned to function.

That helped.
