Chapter 22 - Rachel downsizes

Rachel sold the SUV.

That event generated more family drama than some divorces.

She hated it.

The lease buyout was expensive, but her new financial adviser found a workable path.

She bought a used crossover.

Smaller payment.

She cut food delivery.

Paused Lily’s competitive dance program for one season and enrolled her locally.

Noah left a costly travel soccer club and joined a community team.

Did the children suffer?

They complained.

Then adapted.

Rachel told me:

“I hate that you were right.”

I said:

“About what?”

“That I could afford my life if I changed my life.”

I almost said:

Obviously.

Stopped.

Instead:

“I had to learn that too.”

She looked skeptical.

“You make twice what I do.”

“And spent like it sometimes.”

Ben and I had upgraded our house before Iris.

Bought furniture too quickly.

Took expensive vacations.

Difference:

We paid for them ourselves.

Still, financial discipline is not only for people earning less.

Rachel asked:

“Do you think I’m a bad mother?”

“No.”

“Do you think I used my kids?”

I thought.

“Sometimes.”

She cried.

Then:

May you like

“I think Mom taught both of us to.”

That was the first time Rachel saw the system instead of defending her role inside it.
