PART 3

Emma had not planned to leave the Whitmore mansion that night.

She had planned to tell Carter the baby was a girl.

She had spent the afternoon folding a tiny yellow sweater into a gift box.

She thought maybe a daughter would soften him.

That hope embarrassed her now.

Carter came home late with whiskey on his breath and Victoria behind him like a shadow in silk.

Emma was standing in the nursery.

The walls were pale cream.

The crib had not yet been assembled because Victoria said the baby should sleep in the east wing, closer to staff.

Emma said no.

It was the first no that night.

Not the last.

Carter opened the gift box.

He saw the ultrasound envelope.

He did not smile.

“A girl?”

Emma touched her belly.

“Yes.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“The Whitmore trust favors male succession.”

Emma stared at her.

“She is a baby.”

Carter tossed the ultrasound onto the dresser.

“She complicates things.”

Something cold moved through Emma.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria stepped closer.

“It means you should be grateful this family is still willing to support you.”

Emma laughed once.

She could not help it.

“My mother warned me about people who use support like a leash.”

Carter’s face changed.

“Do not bring Anna into my house.”

“Your house?”

Emma looked around the nursery.

“My name is on the renovation account.”

“Our marriage contract protects my inheritance.”

“And my mother has copies of everything.”

That was the second no.

The dangerous one.

Victoria’s eyes flicked toward the hallway.

Someone was there.

Emma saw only a shadow.

Tall.

Male.

Not Carter.

Not staff.

Carter grabbed Emma’s phone from the dresser.

She lunged for it.

He shoved her back.

Her hip struck the crib box.

Pain shot through her belly.

Victoria hissed, “Careful.”

Not because she cared.

Because evidence scared her.

Emma activated location sharing from her smartwatch before Carter ripped it from her wrist.

Three seconds.

Maybe less.

Then the third person entered the room.

A man in a dark coat.

His voice was calm.

“Mrs. Whitmore, this will be easier if you stop fighting.”

Emma looked at Carter.

“What have you done?”

Carter would not meet her eyes.

Victoria answered for him.

May you like

“What we should have done before the wedding.”
