PART 7
Malcolm Price made his first mistake at 3:42 p.m.
He called Anna.
Not from his phone.
Not from his office.
From a burner routed through three states.
Anna answered because Sophia nodded once.
The recording system was already live.
Malcolm’s voice was smooth.
“Agent Carter.”
Anna looked at Emma asleep in the hospital bed.
“I retired.”
“People like us do not retire.”
Anna said nothing.
Malcolm continued.
“This situation can be contained.”
Anna walked to the window.
Below, news vans were gathering near the hospital entrance.
“You attacked my pregnant daughter.”
“I moved an unstable woman from a volatile home.”
Anna’s voice stayed calm.
“She was found bleeding at a bus stop.”
“That was unfortunate.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Distance.
Malcolm always spoke like language could wash blood from his hands.
Anna asked, “Who hired you?”
He laughed softly.
“You know I never answer that.”
“You will.”
“Anna, be careful.”
His voice dropped.
“You have one daughter.”
Anna’s eyes went cold.
Sophia straightened.
Malcolm had just made threat jurisdiction easy.
Anna replied, “And now I have your threat on a federal recording.”
Silence.
For the first time in all the years Anna had chased him, Malcolm Price had nothing clever to say.
Sophia signaled to the tech.
Trace locked.
Location narrowed.
Three federal vehicles left the hospital garage within four minutes.
Malcolm was arrested in a private airport lounge forty-two minutes later with a passport, cash, and a ticket under another name.
In his bag, agents found a folder.
Emma’s medical records.
Prenatal appointments.
A copy of her marriage contract.
And a page titled Contingency if pregnancy continues.
Anna read the title and felt the old rage return.
Not hot.
Not wild.
Useful.
Carter claimed he had never seen the folder.
Victoria said Malcolm created it alone.
Malcolm said nothing.
Then Sophia found the payment trail.
It did not come from Carter’s personal account.
It came from the Whitmore Family Trust.
Authorized by Victoria.
Approved by Carter.
And countersigned by a trustee whose name made Anna lower the page slowly.
Judge Raymond Whitmore.
Carter’s uncle.
The man who had signed emergency custody motions for half the city’s wealthy families.

The bigger name Emma sensed had been there all along.
