PART 4
The third man’s name was Malcolm Price.
Emma did not know it then.
Anna knew it the moment Emma whispered it in the ICU.
Malcolm Price had once been a federal fixer.
Not officially.
Men like Malcolm never were.
He solved problems for rich families whose children crashed cars, threatened witnesses, or made inconvenient women disappear.
Anna had chased him for three years during her last federal case.
She never caught him cleanly.
He always stood one room away from the crime.
One signature away from the payment.
One phone call away from immunity.
When Emma whispered his name, Anna felt the past open beneath her feet.
Detective Luis Alvarez looked at her from the doorway.
He knew that name too.
Carter did not.
That was his second mistake.
He thought Malcolm was only hired muscle.
He had no idea Malcolm carried old ghosts with him.
Anna stepped closer to Carter.
“You hired Malcolm Price?”
Carter swallowed.
Victoria whispered, “Anna, please.”
That please told Anna the truth.
Victoria knew exactly who Malcolm was.
Police Officer Grant repeated, “Mr. Whitmore, step away from the bed.”
Carter lifted both hands.
“This is insane.”
“My wife is traumatized.”
“She wandered out.”
“She fell.”
Anna looked at Emma’s bruised wrists.
“At five months pregnant?”
Carter’s jaw tightened.
“She has been unstable.”
Anna smiled then.
It was small.
It made Victoria step back.
“There is that word.”
Detective Alvarez opened a folder.
“We have a warrant for your residence, your vehicles, your phones, and all security recordings from the Whitmore property.”
Victoria shook her head.
“You cannot search our home.”
Anna turned toward her.
“Your home was authorized for search thirty-eight minutes ago.”
Victoria looked at Carter.
He looked at the floor.
The arrogance was leaking out of him.
Slowly.
Emma tried to speak.
Anna leaned down immediately.
“Save your strength.”
Emma shook her head.
“The nursery.”
Anna nodded.
“We will get it.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“He said if I disappeared, everyone would believe I ran.”
Anna touched her daughter’s hair.
“No.”
“I would never believe that.”
For the first time since waking, Emma cried.
Not loudly.
Just enough for the monitor to quicken again.
Anna stood between her daughter and the Whitmores.
The officers moved forward.
Carter finally understood he was not in a hospital drama anymore.
May you like
He was in Anna Carter’s case file.
