Chapter 11 - THE METAL CASE Lucas abandoned his SUV at a shopping center and disappeared into the afternoon crowd.
Police found Miranda’s credentials inside the vehicle, along with a copy of Leah’s testimony schedule. He had known exactly when every investigator would be occupied at court.
The metal case contained Ethan’s personal effects from the hospital after his crash.
His watch.
Wallet.
Wedding ring.
And Leah’s silver medical bracelet.
The storage clerk remembered the item because Lucas had insisted on opening it privately before leaving.
A camera captured him removing a narrow black capsule from the bracelet’s inner edge.
The capsule was a secure memory device.
Lucas now possessed whatever Ethan had hidden.
Elias blamed himself for attending the hearing instead of watching the storage facility.
Vega stopped him.
“Lucas planned around the people trying to protect Leah. That is not the same as you causing it.”
Leah heard the familiar argument.
Responsibility belonged to the person who acted, not the person who failed to predict every act.
She was beginning to believe it.
Forensic technicians examined Ethan’s phone archive and found a backup reference to the capsule.

WITNESS ORIGINAL
Evan’s recordings were copies.
Ethan had collected an original statement from someone inside Lucas’s network.
Calvin claimed he did not know the witness’s identity.
Miranda asked to speak with prosecutors again.
This time, she wanted a deal.
She said Lucas had begun stealing from trusts long before Ethan died. Miranda discovered the fraud after marrying Ethan but joined the scheme when Lucas promised her financial security.
“Ethan was going to leave me,” she said.
“So you helped kill him?” Vega asked.
“I helped frighten him. Lucas said the car would stall. He said Ethan would miss the meeting and reconsider.”
The same defense everyone used.
They expected controlled harm.
Miranda claimed the capsule contained a statement from Lucas’s wife, Caroline Venn.
Caroline disappeared four years earlier. Lucas told friends she left the country after a breakdown.
In truth, she had recorded his financial crimes and sought help from Ethan.
Ethan hid her statement inside Leah’s bracelet because Lucas would never search a child.
“Where is Caroline now?” Vega asked.
Miranda looked toward the floor.
“Lucas said she died.”
“Did you see a body?”
“No.”
Lucas contacted Elias that evening from an encrypted number.
“Bring me the trust access code,” he said. “I give you the capsule.”
“The trust is frozen.”
“You still have Ethan’s emergency recovery phrase.”
Elias did.
His son had given him a sealed envelope years earlier. Elias never opened it.
Leah stood beside him during the call.
Lucas continued.
“Midnight. The old paper mill. Come alone.”
“No.”
Lucas laughed.
“Then ask Leah whether she wants the witness to remain alive.”
A video arrived.
A woman sat tied to a chair inside a dark industrial room.
She appeared older than the photograph of Caroline Venn, but the face matched.
The original witness was alive.
Lucas had found her before Ethan died and kept her hidden for years.
Caroline lifted her head toward the camera.
“Don’t trade the trust,” she said. “He needs Leah’s code because the money isn’t the target.”
