Chapter 13 - THE BOY WHO DISAPPEARED TWICE Leah caught Evan’s wrist before he vanished through the rear door.
She screamed and held on while a masked man pulled from outside.
Detective Vega fired toward the ground beside the attacker. He released Evan and ran between parked police vehicles.
Aaron Price, attending as a civilian witness, tackled him near the access road.
The mask came off.
Thomas Price.
Aaron’s missing father.
Thomas looked thinner and bruised, but alive.
Aaron released him in shock.
“You tried to take Evan.”
“I was trying to move him before Lucas’s people reached the van.”
“You wore a mask.”
“Because half the officers here still answer to him.”
Vega ordered Thomas handcuffed.
He claimed his disappearance beneath the overpass had been staged after Lucas attacked him. Caroline’s allies found him and hid him while he gathered names inside the police department.
“Why not contact Aaron?” Vega asked.
“Because Lucas monitors him.”
Aaron stared at his father.
“You always say someone else forced your silence.”
Thomas lowered his head.
“I chose money first. Fear came later.”
He gave Vega a list of officers, social workers, and private transport companies connected to Lucas.
Officer Neil Grant, arrested during the false custody attempt, was only one.
Thomas also identified the person who had submitted Evan’s first abuse recording.
Caroline.
She escaped Lucas briefly, accessed Evan’s phone through the clinic network, and sent the file to police before being captured again.
She wrote the sentence:
She finally has a witness.
Caroline had never met Leah.
She understood what it meant to possess truth that powerful people called madness.
Thomas revealed one final fact.
Lucas kept duplicate servers beneath the juvenile treatment center where Sylvia Trent once worked. If police raided openly, remote triggers would destroy the records.
Aaron volunteered to enter using his father’s old credentials.
Vega refused until Elias pointed out that Lucas still believed Thomas controlled his son.
They designed a controlled operation.
Aaron entered the abandoned facility with Thomas pretending to transfer Evan.
Evan wore a tracking vest and insisted on participating.
Leah was furious.
“You told me courage meant letting trained people do dangerous things.”
Elias accepted the accusation.
“Evan is making his own decision with full information. You were being asked to enter without training.”
“That doesn’t make me less scared.”
“No.”
Evan took her hand.
“I recorded Miranda because I couldn’t leave you there. I need to finish this because I won’t spend the rest of my life waiting for them to rename me.”
The raid recovered the server.
Police found records for dozens of teenagers, forged medical diagnoses, hidden trust accounts, and interstate transports.
Sylvia Trent was arrested in a basement office while attempting to erase files.
Lucas was not there.
The server’s newest activity came from Elias’s home.
Someone had accessed the porch camera, door locks, and Wi-Fi network during the operation.
When they returned, the house appeared untouched.
Then Leah entered her bedroom.
Every unopened letter Elias had written her lay spread across the bed.
In the center rested Ethan’s wedding ring.
A note beneath it read:
Your father chose the wrong witness.
Leah picked up the ring.
