PART 5

Carol reached for the first envelope.

Claire stopped her.

“Not yet.”

Carol’s face tightened.

“Claire, this is unnecessary.”

Claire looked at the tablet.

“Was the chat necessary?”

Megan’s eyes filled.

“Claire, I didn’t mean—”

Claire turned toward her.

“Which part?”

Megan flinched.

“The laughing?”

“The screenshots?”

“The message where you asked if taking the house was legal?”

Megan covered her mouth.

Jason shoved his chair back fully.

“Enough.”

Claire looked at him.

“Sit down.”

He laughed.

“You don’t get to order me around in Mom’s house.”

Claire’s face did not change.

“That’s the first thing we’re fixing.”

Carol’s hand went to her cardigan collar.

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Claire picked up the first envelope and placed it in front of Carol.

“This one is for you.”

Carol stared at it.

Claire picked up the second.

“This one is for Jason.”

Then the third.

“And this one is for Megan.”

Nobody opened them.

That was how Claire knew fear had entered the room.

Jason tried another tactic.

He softened his voice.

“Claire, don’t make this ugly.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“You called me a sad bank teller in the chat.”

His jaw clenched.

“You called me a wallet with abandonment issues.”

Silence.

“You made jokes about my miscarriages.”

Carol whispered, “Sweetheart…”

Claire turned so sharply that Carol stepped back.

“Do not sweetheart me tonight.”

The wooden spoon lowered in Carol’s hand.

For once, the mother who could cry on command looked unsure where to place her face.

Claire continued.

“I paid your mortgage arrears.”

“I paid Jason’s tax penalties.”

“I paid Megan’s rent.”

“I paid for the roof.”

“I paid for the surgery.”

“I paid for groceries.”

“I paid for birthdays I wasn’t thanked for.”

She touched the tablet.

“And while I was doing it, you were laughing in a room called The Real Ones.”

Megan started crying.

Jason rolled his eyes.

That was his mistake.

Claire saw it.

The old reflex.

Dismiss her pain before it became dangerous.

She opened Jason’s envelope herself and slid the papers across the table.

“Here are the bank records.”

His expression changed.

Carol whispered, “What bank records?”

Claire looked at Jason.

“The ones showing you used my income information to apply for a loan against a house you don’t own.”

Jason went still.

Megan whispered, “Jason…”

Claire’s voice dropped.
