part 9

PART 9
Jason followed Claire to the front hallway.
That was his final mistake.
She had already picked up her coat.
Megan was still crying in the kitchen.
Carol remained at the table, staring at the notice like it might vanish if ignored long enough.
Claire reached for the front door.
Jason grabbed her wrist.
Not hard enough to bruise.
Hard enough to remind her who he thought he was.
Claire looked down at his hand.
Then up at his face.
“Let go.”
He did not.
“You are not doing this to us.”
Claire’s voice stayed even.
“Let go.”
Jason leaned closer.
“You think Dad made you special?”
“He made you useful.”
That might have broken her once.
Tonight, it only gave her the last piece of proof she needed.
Claire looked over his shoulder.
“Megan.”
Megan appeared in the kitchen doorway, face wet, phone in her hand.
Claire had seen her raise it when Jason followed.
Recording.
For once, Megan had not looked away.
Jason noticed too late.
He dropped Claire’s wrist.
Claire opened the door.
Cold evening air entered the warm house.
Carol’s voice came from the kitchen.
“Jason, stop.”
Too late.
Always too late.
Claire turned back to them.
“All future communication goes through Alan Price.”
Jason looked at Megan’s phone.
“You recorded me?”
Megan’s voice shook.
“Yes.”
He looked betrayed.
The irony almost made Claire laugh.
Megan stepped farther into the hallway.
“I’m done helping you hurt her.”
Jason sneered.
“You want a medal?”
“No.”
Megan looked at Claire.
“I want to tell the truth.”
Carol stood now.
Her face was pale.
“Megan, don’t.”
Megan ignored her.
“Jason used Mom’s tablet to message the lender.”
“He said if it looked like Mom approved it, Claire would feel too guilty to challenge it.”
Jason exploded.
“You stupid—”
Claire lifted her phone.
“Careful.”
He stopped.
The family stood there, all masks gone.
Carol afraid.
Jason exposed.
Megan shaking.
Claire free enough to finally see the room clearly.
She looked at Megan.
“Send the recording to Alan.”
Megan nodded.
Claire turned to Carol.
“You have thirty days to meet with him and sign the compliance agreement.”
Carol whispered, “And if I don’t?”
Claire opened the door wider.
“Then Dad’s conditions activate.”
Carol’s face crumpled.
For the first time, she looked less like a mother and more like a tenant who had spent years insulting the owner.
Claire stepped onto the porch.
Behind her, Jason shouted something.
She did not turn around.
The night air was cold.
Clean.
Quiet.
