PART 8

Carol sat down slowly.

Not from weakness.

From calculation.

Claire knew the difference now.

Carol’s tears had stopped completely.

Her eyes moved across the deed copy, the chat printouts, Jason’s bank records, Megan’s envelope, the tablet, and finally Claire’s face.

She was not looking for forgiveness.

She was looking for an opening.

“Claire,” she said softly.

“I am your mother.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Carol reached for that word like a weapon.

“Then you understand I did what I had to do.”

“No.”

“I understand you did what worked.”

Carol’s face tightened.

Jason paced behind her.

“This is insane.”

“We’re not letting you throw Mom out.”

Claire turned.

“You’re not letting me?”

Jason stopped.

The old language had slipped out.

Let.

Permit.

Allow.

As if Claire had been an employee asking for time off.

Claire opened her purse and removed one final folded paper.

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

“What is that?”

“Notice.”

Carol stiffened.

Megan looked horrified.

Claire placed it on the table.

“I am not throwing Mom out tonight.”

Carol’s shoulders loosened.

Too soon.

Claire continued.

“But the life residence right has conditions.”

“No fraudulent activity.”

“No attempt to encumber the property.”

“No harassment of the owner.”

“No unauthorized loans.”

“No coercive agreements.”

Jason looked toward Carol.

Claire watched the truth land.

Robert Bennett had not only left Claire the house.

He had protected her from exactly this.

Carol’s voice shook.

“You would use your father’s legal language against me?”

Claire’s answer was quiet.

“No.”

“You used his death against me.”

“I am using his protection.”

Megan wiped her face.

“What happens now?”

Claire looked at her sister.

“That depends on each of you.”

Jason laughed.

“You think you’re in charge now?”

Claire looked around the kitchen.

At the marble island.

The pendant lights.

The dining table.

The flowers Carol had arranged to make manipulation look domestic.

“Yes.”

The word was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Jason stepped closer.

“Claire—”

She raised her phone.

“Take one more step, and I call Alan.”

He stopped.

Carol whispered, “You changed.”

Claire looked at her mother.

“No.”

“You just never met the part of me that stops paying to be loved.”

That sentence ended the argument more effectively than shouting.

Megan sat down and sobbed into both hands.

Jason looked furious.

Carol looked wounded in the way guilty people perform injury when consequences arrive.

Claire gathered the tablet and the envelopes.

Dinner was still untouched.

The chicken had gone cold.
