PART 4

By the time Daniel reached Sandra’s house, the front porch light was off.

Rain had begun to fall.

Emily had stopped answering her phone.

He pounded on the door so hard his knuckles split.

Sandra opened it with wet cheeks and a performance already prepared.

“She slipped in the bath.”

Those had been the first words out of her mouth.

No greeting.

No explanation.

Just a lie, ready and polished.

Daniel pushed past her.

Martin came out of the kitchen smelling like whiskey and anger.

He said Emily was hysterical.

He said teenage girls made things up.

He said Daniel had no legal right to enter the home.

Then Daniel saw the blood diluted in the water leading from the bathroom tile.

He found Emily wrapped in a towel, barely conscious, sitting on the floor beside the tub.

Her lip was split.

Her shoulder was already turning dark.

One side of her face was swelling.

And when he lifted her, she clung to him and whispered one sentence into his neck.

“Please don’t leave me here.”

In the hospital, Dr. Reed documented everything.

The injury patterns.

The bruising at different stages of healing.

The water aspiration in her lungs from being forced under.

The older scar near her ribs.

The burn mark on her wrist that Emily first claimed came from curling irons.

Later she admitted Martin had pressed a hot spoon against her for “wasting dinner.”

Detective Laura Kim arrived before midnight.

She had the kind of face that made children trust her and liars sweat.

She interviewed Emily alone with a child advocate present.

She interviewed Daniel next.

Then she interviewed Sandra.

Sandra cried beautifully.

She said Martin was strict but loving.

She said Emily had become unstable since starting high school.

She said Daniel was violent and had reappeared to manipulate the situation.

Detective Kim listened without interrupting.

Then she asked one question.

“If Emily slipped in the bath, why are there bruises on the backs of her arms in the shape of hands?”

Sandra stared.

No tears.

No answer.

Across the hall, Martin arrived with his attorney.

He demanded to see Sandra.

He demanded to see Emily.

He demanded that the hospital release private information.

Then he learned the police had already photographed the bathroom.

The broken towel rack.

The cracked tile.

The clump of blonde hair caught in the drain.

The blood on the edge of the sink.

And the empty phone on the floor with one outgoing call to Daniel Harper.

Martin stopped acting offended after that.

He started acting careful.

Daniel saw the shift and hated it more.

Guilty men often look calmer once they realize how much work a lie requires.

At 2:14 a.m., Detective Kim came into Emily’s room again.

Her voice was gentle.

“Emily, I need to know exactly who hurt you in that bathroom.”

Emily stared at the ceiling for a long time.

Then she answered.

“Martin held me down.”

Her eyes slid toward the closed door.

“And my mom watched.”
