part 6

PART 6
Martin was arrested forty-eight hours later.
Assault of a minor.
Child endangerment.
Attempted coercion.
Possible attempted homicide pending medical review because of the forced submersion in the bathtub.
Sandra was not arrested that same night.
That hurt Emily more than she admitted.
Martin had always been the storm.
But Sandra had been the roof that chose not to protect her.
The prosecutor needed time.
Failure to report.
Accessory conduct.
Obstruction.
Child neglect.
The law was careful even when the heart wanted speed.
Daniel took Emily to his apartment after her discharge.
It was smaller than Sandra’s house.
Older.
Quieter.
A place with secondhand books, a blue couch, and framed photos of mountains on the walls.
Emily stood in the doorway holding her duffel bag from the hospital and whispered, “It smells safe.”
Daniel had to turn away again after that.
The first week was hard.
Emily woke up from nightmares clawing at her own blanket.
She hid food in the bedroom dresser.
She apologized before asking to use the bathroom.
Once, Daniel knocked softly on her door and found her sitting on the floor, staring at a bathtub full of water in a cleaning bucket as if it might attack her.
He emptied it without a word.
Then he sat on the floor with her until her breathing slowed.
At therapy, Dr. Molina told Daniel something that both helped and haunted him.
“Children adapt to survive adults who should have protected them.”
Emily did not hate Sandra all at once.
That would have been easier.
She missed her in flashes.
A certain perfume.
The way Sandra used to sing while doing dishes before Martin moved in.
The old bedtime stories from when Emily was six.
Then she would remember Sandra watching silently while Martin twisted her wrist.
And the missing would curdle into grief.
One afternoon, Detective Kim returned with an evidence update.
They had recovered deleted text messages between Sandra and Martin.
One read, She almost called Daniel again.
Another said, Then take her phone.
A third, sent the night of the attack, made everyone in the room go quiet.
Handle it before she ruins us.
Emily stared at the paper until the words blurred.
She had wanted to believe Sandra was weak.
Weakness could be mourned.
This was choice.
This was participation.
This was her mother deciding reputation mattered more than her daughter breathing.
That night, Emily asked Daniel if people could love you and still destroy you.
He answered honestly.
“Yes.”
She stared out the window for a long time.
“Then maybe that isn’t the kind of love I want anymore.”
Daniel did not answer.
He only sat beside her.
