part 8

PART 8
Emily’s voice was barely audible at first.
The judge leaned forward.
The attorneys stopped shuffling papers.
Even Martin looked surprised that she had stood up at all.
“Can you tell the court what happened on the night you were injured?”
Emily folded her hands so people would not see them shaking.
“I called my father.”
Martin’s lawyer stood.
“Objection to terminology.”
The judge shut it down instantly.
“Overruled.”
Daniel looked down.
He would cry about that word later, alone.
Emily continued.
“Martin heard me.”
She told them about the bathroom.
About the wet tile.
About Martin grabbing her arms.
About hitting the sink.
About the water.
About trying to breathe.
About Sandra standing in the doorway saying the neighbors might hear.
Then came the sentence that split the room open.
“I screamed for my mom.”
Sandra stopped pretending to cry.
Emily looked directly at her.
“She told me to stop making it harder.”
No lawyer could repair the silence that followed.
Martin’s attorney tried anyway.
He suggested Emily was confused from panic.
She said no.
He suggested she resented Martin’s authority.
She said yes, because he hurt her.
He suggested Sandra was trying her best.
That was the only question that made Emily pause.
Then she answered with a clarity that made even the court reporter glance up.
“If that was her best, then her best was evil.”
Sandra covered her mouth.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The judge called a short recess after that.
When court resumed, the prosecutor introduced one last piece of evidence.
A voice memo.
It had been auto-saved from Emily’s phone during the struggle.
Mostly splashing.
Mostly shouting.
Mostly terror.
But there were words.
Martin’s voice.
Then Sandra’s.
Then Emily choking.
Nobody in the room could deny it after that.
By evening, Martin was remanded without bond.
Sandra’s bail was set high and conditions were strict.
No contact.
No indirect messages.
No visitation.
Nothing.
As Sandra was led out, she turned toward Emily.
For one terrible moment, Emily feared she would apologize.
Instead Sandra whispered, “You’ve destroyed this family.”
Emily rose from the bench before Daniel could stop her.
“No.”
Her voice carried through the courtroom.
May you like
“You did.”
