Chapter 5 - the arrest at the family house

Sheriff Danner entered with six deputies.

He carried no visible warrant.

“Ethan Ramirez, step away from the table.”

“On what charge?”

“Assaulting Margaret Whitaker and destroying property belonging to Richard Vale.”

“This house belongs to my mother.”

“Richard holds temporary guardianship and property authority.”

“Obtained through fraud.”

Danner’s gaze moved toward the film strip.

“Put that down.”

Ethan slipped it into the inner lining of his duffel.

Danner drew his weapon.

“Now.”

Mrs. Whitaker stepped between them.

“He didn’t assault me.”

“Margaret, go home.”

“You threatened my granddaughter.”

Every deputy heard her.

Danner’s expression changed.

“Careful.”

“No. I’ve been careful for twelve years.”

She pointed toward the hidden room.

“Paul helped Vale move the barrels. He helped forge Ethan’s death. He knew Maria was chained.”

One deputy lowered his eyes.

Another shifted uneasily.

Danner moved quickly.

He seized Margaret’s arm and pushed her aside.

Ethan caught her before she struck the wall.

The sheriff raised his weapon toward Ethan’s chest.

“There. Assaulting an officer.”

“You pushed her.”

“My body camera will show what happened.”

Ethan looked at the device clipped to Danner’s uniform.

No light.

It was not recording.

The other deputies’ cameras were also dark.

Danner had prepared another scene without a beginning.

Ethan raised his hands.

He allowed them to cuff him.

Fighting would give the sheriff the ending he wanted.

As they escorted him outside, Ethan saw a small figure beside Mrs. Whitaker’s fence.

A teenage boy held up a phone.

He had recorded the entire entrance through the window.

Danner noticed him.

The boy ran.

Two deputies chased him.

Mrs. Whitaker whispered:

“That’s Tommy Reeves. Harold’s grandson.”

The Price family had been watching too.

At the county jail, Danner placed Ethan in an interview room without his attorney.

He set the false casualty letter on the table.

“You soldiers bring trauma home. Sometimes you see enemies where there aren’t any.”

Ethan looked at the sheriff’s fingerprint beneath the seal.

“You made my mother mourn me while I was alive.”

“Richard asked me to confirm a document.”

“You wore a uniform?”

Danner smiled.

“Prove it.”

Ethan leaned back.

“You killed Harold Price.”

“No.”

“You helped hide the waste.”

“No.”

“You killed my father.”

Danner’s smile disappeared.

“Thomas drove too fast.”

“So you were there.”

The sheriff stood.

“I read the report.”

“You said his first name.”

“Everyone knew Thomas.”

“But the report called him T. Ramirez.”

Danner stared at him.

A small mistake.

Not proof.

But fear had entered the room.

The sheriff leaned close.

“Your mother is sick. Richard tried to care for her. You came home with combat problems and broke into a house you no longer own.”

“I used my key.”

“You attacked a neighbor.”

“She confessed before your deputies.”

“She is confused.”

“Everyone who tells the truth becomes confused around you.”

Danner struck the table.

“You think your uniform makes you untouchable?”

“I’m not wearing one.”

The answer unsettled him more.

Ethan no longer needed military authority to stand his ground.

Danner left.

Minutes later, the fire alarm sounded.

Smoke entered beneath the interview-room door.

The lock remained closed.

Ethan wrapped his shirt around his mouth and kicked the lower panel until it bent.

A deputy appeared through the smoke.

Not one of Danner’s loyal men.

Deputy Sarah Cole unlocked the door.

“Move.”

“Where’s Danner?”

“Gone.”

She led Ethan through a rear corridor.

The smoke came from a trash fire in the evidence room. Someone had tried to burn the false casualty letter, Maria’s medical photographs, and the seized film.

Sarah had removed the evidence bag first.

“Why help me?”

“My father drank town water for thirty years. He died of liver cancer.”

The contamination was not old history.

People were still paying for it.

Sarah handed Ethan his duffel.

“Tommy Reeves uploaded the arrest video before they caught him. State police are coming.”

“Where’s Mrs. Whitaker?”

“Danner’s deputies took her.”

“To jail?”

Sarah shook her head.

“No booking record.”

Ethan’s phone rang.

Richard Vale spoke.

“Bring the map to Blackwood church before midnight, or Margaret joins your mother in the basement.”
