Chapter 6 - the church with four doors

Blackwood Church had been abandoned since a tornado damaged its roof fifteen years earlier.

Four doors faced the four compass directions.

Ethan arrived alone at 11:47 p.m., carrying a copy of the map.

The original remained with Deputy Cole.

Moonlight entered through broken stained glass. Dust covered the pews.

Mrs. Whitaker sat tied to a chair near the ruined altar.

Richard Vale stood behind her with a revolver.

He was younger than Ethan expected, perhaps forty-five, with expensive boots and a calm voice.

“You look like Thomas.”

“You look like a man hiding behind an old woman.”

Richard smiled.

“She helped us for years.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

“I was afraid.”

“You were paid.”

“I returned the money.”

“To whom? The dead?”

Ethan stopped twenty feet away.

“Release her.”

“The map.”

He placed the copy on the floor.

Richard ordered him to slide it forward.

Ethan obeyed.

Richard examined the red line and laughed.

“This isn’t complete.”

“It’s what was left.”

“Your mother knew the final location.”

“She told you nothing.”

“She told me enough before the drugs stopped working.”

Ethan’s hands curled.

Richard continued:

“Thomas created four routes. Church. Museum. House. Well. Only one leads to the evidence. The others trigger destruction.”

“Then why need me?”

“Because Thomas used your childhood name as the access phrase.”

Ethan had been eleven when his father died.

Thomas sometimes called him Little Wolf.

No one outside the family knew.

Richard aimed the gun at Margaret.

“You open the well.”

A sound moved behind the western door.

Richard turned.

Lydia Price stepped inside holding a shotgun.

“Let her go.”

Richard fired first.

The bullet struck the wooden doorframe near Lydia’s head.

She returned fire into the ceiling, showering plaster.

Ethan charged.

He drove Richard into the altar. The revolver skidded across the floor.

Margaret tipped the chair deliberately, knocking Richard’s legs from beneath him.

Ethan pinned him.

Then headlights swept across the windows.

Sheriff Danner’s voice boomed through a loudspeaker.

“Everyone inside, drop your weapons.”

Richard laughed beneath Ethan.

“He isn’t here for me.”

Danner entered through the north door with armed deputies.

Lydia lowered her shotgun slowly.

Ethan kept one knee against Richard’s chest.

“Sheriff, he kidnapped Margaret.”

Danner looked toward her restraints.

Then toward Richard.

“Did he?”

Margaret shouted, “Yes!”

Danner raised his weapon.

Not at Richard.

At Margaret.

Ethan moved instantly, pulling her chair sideways as the sheriff fired.

The bullet struck the altar.

Deputy Cole entered behind Danner.

She aimed at him.

“Drop it.”

The other deputies hesitated.

Danner turned.

“You’re finished in this county.”

Sarah answered, “So are you.”

Sirens approached from the highway.

State police.

Danner stepped backward toward the east door.

Richard suddenly grabbed the fallen revolver.

Ethan kicked his wrist.

The weapon fired into the floor.

Richard rolled free and ran through the southern exit.

Danner escaped through the east.

The two men separated deliberately, forcing officers to choose.

State police pursued Danner.

Ethan ran after Richard.

Outside, the dark pickup accelerated across the cemetery road.

Ethan could not reach it.

Lydia came beside him.

“He’s going to the dry well.”

“Then we follow.”

Margaret had freed one hand from the rope.

She pointed toward the church floor.

During the struggle, the altar had shifted.

Beneath it was a metal plate engraved with the compass symbol.

Ethan lifted it.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Thomas’s route did not begin outside.

It began beneath the church.

At the bottom stood four steel boxes.

Three were marked with warning symbols.

The fourth carried a carved wolf.

Ethan placed his hand against it.

A mechanical lock clicked.

Inside were soil reports, photographs, bank ledgers, and a cassette recorder.

Thomas’s voice filled the underground room.

“If Ethan is hearing this, then Maria kept him alive long enough to come home.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

His father continued:

“Paul Danner did not kill Harold Price. Richard Vale’s father ordered the fire. Paul helped conceal it. But my crash was different.”

The tape hissed.

“I trusted the wrong person inside my own family.”

Ethan looked toward Margaret and Lydia.

Thomas named no one before the tape ended abruptly.

Then a second cassette began playing automatically.

Maria’s voice.

Recorded recently.

“Ethan, Richard forced me to tell him about the church. I lied about the last route. The real evidence is not here.”

The boxes contained copies.

The originals remained somewhere else.

Maria continued:

“Your father hid them inside the place Richard will never destroy because he believes it belongs to him.”

Lydia understood first.

“Vale Development headquarters.”

👉 Ethan reached his father’s underground archive, only to learn the most powerful evidence was hidden inside Richard’s own building.
