Chapter 7 - the map inside the enemy’s office

Vale Development occupied the tallest building in town—a six-story glass office overlooking the courthouse.

Richard’s father built it on the site of the old newspaper press after Harold Price died.

Ethan studied the original construction plans with Lydia and Deputy Cole.

Thomas had served as county surveyor during the foundation work.

He could have hidden something inside the structure.

A handwritten note on the church map showed four vertical lines beneath the northwest column.

“Foundation pier,” Ethan said.

Lydia shook her head.

“The building sits above the old newspaper basement.”

Harold’s pressroom had never been fully demolished. Vale poured new foundations around it.

Thomas could have placed evidence where Richard’s family assumed fire had already destroyed everything.

State police arrested Sheriff Danner before dawn after his patrol vehicle crashed into a drainage ditch.

He survived and demanded an attorney.

Richard remained missing.

Maria was moved to a secure rehabilitation clinic outside the county. Only Ethan, Lydia, and the state investigator knew the location.

Mrs. Whitaker refused protection.

“I hid long enough.”

She gave a full statement identifying Richard, Danner, and the men who staged Ethan’s casualty notification.

One was a costume-store owner.

The other had been Dr. Calvin Danner.

The doctor used hospital sedatives on Maria and signed false capacity evaluations granting Richard control.

State agents arrested him at the airport.

The county network began collapsing.

But the chemical evidence remained vulnerable.

Vale Development announced an emergency demolition inspection, claiming structural damage had made the building unsafe.

Richard intended to destroy the basement before investigators obtained a warrant.

Ethan and Lydia entered during the evacuation wearing maintenance jackets provided by Deputy Cole.

They reached the northwest stairwell.

A concrete wall beneath the parking level carried the compass symbol beneath layers of paint.

Ethan struck it with a sledgehammer.

The hollow sound confirmed a chamber.

He broke through.

Inside stood an old newspaper archive cabinet sealed in plastic.

Harold Price’s name appeared on the drawer.

Lydia touched it with trembling fingers.

“My father put this here?”

“Maybe Thomas did.”

The cabinet contained original photographs of the waste barrels, water-test results, and a ledger listing payments from Vale Development to Paul Danner, Dr. Danner, county officials, and bank managers.

One payment appeared beside Maria’s name.

Ethan stared at it.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

Dated three weeks after Thomas’s death.

His mother had accepted money from Vale.

Lydia said nothing.

The chamber also contained Thomas’s damaged watch and the original brake line from his truck.

A forensic note stated the line had been cut cleanly.

Thomas had known someone sabotaged his vehicle before he died—or another person recovered the part afterward.

A door slammed behind them.

Richard stood in the opening holding a gasoline can.

“You always looked for villains outside your family.”

Ethan moved between him and Lydia.

Richard poured fuel across the floor.

“Your mother took the payment.”

“Why?”

“To sign a statement saying Thomas was depressed and reckless.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

Maria had helped preserve the accident ruling.

Richard held a lighter.

“She protected me from consequences once. Then she became righteous when I asked for the house.”

“You chained her.”

“She broke the agreement.”

“What agreement?”

Richard smiled.

“Ask why she never told you what Thomas found before the crash.”

He flicked the lighter.

Lydia reached for the cabinet.

Ethan kicked the gasoline can toward Richard.

Fuel splashed across his boots.

The flame fell.

Richard panicked and stamped it out before it reached him.

Ethan crossed the space and struck him once, hard enough to send him into the wall.

Richard drew a knife.

The fight moved into the parking level.

Lydia dragged the archive cabinet away from the fuel.

Richard slashed Ethan’s arm.

Ethan trapped his wrist and forced the knife down.

State agents charged through the stairwell.

Richard broke free and climbed onto the ledge overlooking the lower ramp.

“Stay back!”

He held the knife beneath his own throat.

The agents stopped.

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Your mother killed your father as surely as I did.”

Then he jumped.

He landed on the roof of a moving delivery truck below and rolled from sight before officers reached the edge.

He had timed the escape.

Lydia opened Thomas’s forensic envelope.

Beneath the brake line was Maria’s signed statement.

My husband threatened to expose private family matters. I believe grief and instability affected his judgment before the crash.

Ethan recognized her signature.
