Chapter 1

Soldier Returns Home to Find His Bruised Wife and Feverish Newborn Before Military Police Reveal the Nursery Camera Recorded Everything.
Sergeant Michael Carter stood in the bright foyer of his Columbus home with his newborn son burning against his chest.
The baby’s small body trembled beneath the pale blanket. His cries were weak now, the kind that terrified Michael more than screaming would have.
Beside Michael, Emma Carter knelt on the polished floor, stained shirt clinging to her trembling body, bruises dark across her cheek and arms.
Across from them stood Patricia Carter, his mother, wrists restrained behind her back by a military police officer.
Patricia still lifted her chin like she owned the room.
“She needed discipline. That baby was her responsibility.”
Michael’s jaw locked.
For three months overseas, he had survived by imagining this house safe.
Emma safe.
Their son safe.
Now he was home in uniform, standing between his injured wife and the mother who had raised him to obey silence.
He looked down at the baby’s flushed face, then directly at Patricia.
“He’s burning with fever. Step away from my family.”
Patricia’s expression flickered.
Not guilt.
Offense.
Michael shifted the baby securely into one arm and reached his free hand toward Emma.
She stared at it like she could not believe help had finally arrived.
Then she took it.
Slowly, painfully, she rose.
Behind Patricia, Lauren Carter backed toward the staircase in her pale satin robe.
“Mike, she’s exaggerating everything.”
A child-services investigator stepped into Lauren’s path with a tablet and evidence folder.
The military police officer turned toward Michael.
“Sergeant Carter, we recovered the nursery footage.”
The foyer went still.
Patricia’s eyes darted toward Lauren.
Lauren’s face turned pale.
Attorney Nathan Cole opened a thick brown folder and removed a sealed evidence drive.
Michael looked at him without lowering his son.
“Preserve every second. Nobody leaves this house.”
Patricia’s face finally changed.
May you like
The supposedly broken nursery camera had not been broken at all.
