Chapter 9

Emma could barely stand, but she did not let go of Michael’s hand.
For the first time in weeks, someone held her without correcting her.
Without taking the baby away.
Without telling her she was dramatic.
Michael kept his body between her and Patricia, the newborn tucked securely against his chest.
His son’s skin still felt too hot.
That remained the center of everything.
Not the inheritance documents Nathan carried.
Not Patricia’s pride.
Not Lauren’s panic.
The baby.
Michael looked toward the investigator.
“Medical first.”
She nodded.
“Already called.”
Patricia laughed once, bitter and sharp.
“So now I’m a criminal because I expected a grown woman to mother her child?”
The military police officer tightened his stance.
Michael did not raise his voice.
“Stop talking about my wife.”
Patricia’s eyes filled, suddenly wet.
There it was.
The weapon Michael knew from childhood.
Tears arriving exactly when accountability did.
“You would let them humiliate your own mother?”
Michael’s face shifted.
Pain moved through him, but it did not control him.
“I let you humiliate my wife because I didn’t see clearly enough.”
Emma looked up at him.
He did not look away from Patricia.
“That ended today.”
Lauren whispered, “Mike, please.”
He turned toward her.
“Did you help disable the visible camera?”
Lauren’s lips parted.
Nathan spoke before she could answer.
“Do not respond without counsel.”
Michael glanced at him.
Nathan’s expression was firm.
Not because Lauren deserved protection more than Emma.
Because the process had to survive the emotion.
No completed legal outcome.
No forced confession.
No full footage played in the foyer.
Just preservation.
Michael looked at Nathan.
“Preserve every second.”
Nathan held the evidence drive beside the folder.
“Already duplicated and secured.”
Patricia’s face twisted.
She had not lost the argument yet.
May you like
But she had lost the room.
