Chapter 6

Michael did not yell at first.
That unsettled Patricia.
She knew how to manage shouting. She had trained both her children to mistake her tears for innocence and her outrage for truth.
But Michael entered the foyer like a soldier entering a room that had to be secured before anyone could speak.
He shifted the newborn against his chest.
Checked breathing.
Checked skin heat.
Checked responsiveness.
Then he looked at Emma’s face.
The bruise on her cheek was not old enough to be explained away.
The marks on her arms were not from sleep.
Her fear did not look postpartum.
It looked conditioned.
Patricia tried to speak first.
“Michael, thank God you’re home. Emma has been out of control all morning.”
The military police officer beside her said, “Ma’am, step back.”
Patricia blinked.
No one in her son’s house had ever spoken to her that way.
Lauren, standing halfway down the hall, whispered, “Mike?”
Michael did not look at her.
“Emma,” he said, voice low, “did they stop you from calling for medical help?”
Emma’s lips parted.
Patricia cut in.
“She was hysterical.”
Michael’s eyes snapped to his mother.
“I asked my wife.”
The words struck the room harder than shouting.
Emma tried to answer, but years of being corrected rose in her throat like a wall.
Michael saw it.
He softened his voice without softening his stance.
“Just nod if you need to.”
Emma nodded once.
Patricia scoffed.
That sound ended Michael’s last thread of restraint.
He looked at the officer.
“Secure her.”
Patricia’s face transformed.
“Excuse me?”
The officer moved with professional calm.
No violence.
No chaos.
Just procedure.
Patricia struggled, furious, as her wrists were restrained behind her back.
Lauren backed toward the staircase.
A woman in a gray suit entered then, tablet in hand, expression grim.
Child-services investigator.
Behind her came Nathan Cole with the legal folder Michael had authorized from the airport.
Only then did Patricia understand this was not a son coming home to mediate.

This was a father bringing witnesses.
