Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE LAURA BOUGHT
The second house stood outside Indianapolis behind a row of tall hedges.
Laura purchased it eight months earlier through Larkin Family Services. She paid the deposit with money taken from Emma’s trust.
Police expected an investment property.
They found a child’s bedroom.
The room contained clothes in Emma’s size, schoolbooks, framed photographs, and a new stuffed animal still carrying its store tag.
A calendar marked an intended move date.
The morning after Daniel’s scheduled return.
The house had two exterior locks.
Neither could be opened from the child’s side without a key.
A private tutor’s contract described Emma as emotionally unstable and prohibited unsupervised internet or telephone access.
Laura intended to move her there after gaining guardianship.
The residential facility named in the petition may have been only a legal explanation. In reality, Laura planned to isolate Emma inside a private house while billing the trust for specialized care.
Detective Maya found printed letters addressed to Daniel.
Each appeared to come from Emma.
I am scared when you visit.
Laura is the only mother I trust.
Please stop asking me to come home.
Emma had not written them.
Laura practiced the child’s handwriting using school assignments.
She planned to turn Daniel’s return into evidence of trauma.
If Emma recoiled from him after months of being told he was dangerous, Laura would record the reaction.
Daniel remembered Emma pulling away in the alley.
The plan had already affected her.
The house also contained a suitcase packed for Laura.
Not Emma.
Inside were passports, cash, and documents under Laura’s maiden name.
The Indianapolis property was not intended as a permanent prison.
It was a temporary staging location before Laura fled.
A flight reservation showed two passengers.
Laura Larkin.
Emma Larkin.
Destination: Vancouver.
Laura had obtained a replacement birth certificate listing her address as Emma’s residence.
No court had changed the child’s surname.
Grace believed the altered document was intended only to confuse international travel checks long enough for them to leave.
The financial audit showed a large transfer scheduled for the morning of the flight.
Laura’s plan was clear:
Have Emma declared unstable.
Remove Daniel through psychological allegations.
Control the trust.
Take the child across the border.
Then force Daniel into an international custody fight while Laura lived on Emma’s money.
Why place Emma inside the trash bag if she needed the child alive?
Detective Maya offered the answer.
“The plan changed when Emma found the papers.”
Laura may have decided that a living witness was more dangerous than losing access to the trust.
If Emma died after supposedly running away, Laura could still claim funds for search expenses, legal costs, and management during the investigation.
She may also have believed Daniel would be too devastated and confused to examine every bank record.
The bags of Emma’s clothing in the garage supported that possibility.
Laura had prepared to remove traces of the child from the house.
Daniel attended the emergency custody hearing from the hospital.
Laura appeared from jail beside her attorney.
Her lawyer described Daniel as a recently returned combat veteran acting under intense emotional stress.
Grace presented the junkyard footage, hospital evidence, forged power of attorney, and hidden Indianapolis house.
The judge suspended Laura’s marital financial authority and prohibited any contact with Emma.
The trust was placed under an independent bank.
Daniel supported the restriction even though it limited his own access.
“I don’t want anyone controlling that money alone,” he said.
The judge granted Daniel temporary sole custody, with trauma-support supervision requested by him voluntarily.
Laura listened without expression.
Then she asked to address the court.
“Daniel believes he came home and saved Emma,” she said. “He has no idea what Sarah asked me to do.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Laura had always claimed she never met Sarah.
The judge stopped her from discussing unsupported allegations.
But the name remained between them.
After the hearing, police searched the Indianapolis attic.
Inside a sealed plastic container was a photograph of Laura standing beside Sarah Brooks.
