Chapter 9 - SARAH’S LETTER
Daniel opened Sarah’s envelope with Grace and Detective Maya present.
The first page was dated six years earlier, when Emma was still an infant.
Daniel,
There is something I should have told you before we married. Laura Larkin was once my closest friend. She helped me establish the first version of Emma’s trust because she worked in nonprofit accounting. Then I discovered she had moved money from a children’s fund into her personal account.
Sarah explained that she confronted Laura privately.
Laura promised repayment.
Instead, she created false records suggesting Sarah authorized the transfers. Sarah recovered enough evidence to protect the nonprofit but declined to pursue criminal charges because Laura threatened to involve Sarah’s family.
That was the decision Sarah regretted.
Silence did not make Laura disappear.
It taught her that fear worked.
The letter continued:
Laura knows the trust structure. She knows my parents’ land will eventually become Emma’s inheritance. If she ever approaches you after my death, assume she planned the meeting.
Daniel stopped reading.
Sarah had anticipated the exact entry Laura used.
The second page referred to a larger account.
Not Emma’s trust.
A restitution fund Sarah created using money recovered from the nonprofit case. It remained sealed until Emma turned eighteen.
Laura may have believed the fund held millions.
In reality, its current value was less than two hundred thousand dollars.
The secrecy made it appear more valuable.
Sarah worried Laura would pursue it anyway.
The metal box included copies of Laura’s old fraudulent transfers, signed repayment promises, and audio from their final meeting.
Laura’s voice sounded younger but unmistakable.
“You think because you married a soldier and had a baby you became better than me.”
Sarah answered:
“This is not about being better. You stole from children.”
“You replaced the money.”
“I replaced it.”
“Then no one was hurt.”
“You made me pay for what you took.”
Laura’s final sentence chilled Daniel.
“One day your family will pay me back.”
The recording had no direct threat against Sarah’s life.
It established obsession, motive, and premeditated interest in Emma’s future money.
Why had Laura preserved the box rather than destroy it?
Maya believed she wanted leverage.
The evidence could damage Laura, but Sarah’s letter also revealed a hidden account and Daniel’s ignorance. Laura may have planned to selectively release documents, portray Sarah as deceptive, and fracture Daniel’s trust in the mother of his child.
The box contained one more envelope.
Addressed to Emma.
Daniel did not open it.
“That belongs to her,” he said.
Grace agreed it should remain sealed until Emma chose otherwise.
For the first time, Daniel protected information without controlling it.
Laura was formally charged with attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, financial exploitation, forgery, and obstruction.
Her attorney requested a competency evaluation after her behavior became erratic.
Maya objected to using instability as another shield.
Independent doctors found Laura capable of understanding the proceedings.
The financial audit recovered more than half the missing trust money through frozen property and accounts.
The Indianapolis house would be sold for restitution.
Emma asked what would happen to Laura.
Daniel answered carefully.
“A judge and jury will decide.”
“Will she come home?”
“No.”
“Will we?”
“The old house is still ours, but we don’t have to live there.”
Emma looked relieved.
She wanted a smaller place where she could see the front door from the kitchen.
Daniel agreed.
He also enrolled in family counseling and requested reassignment from future long deployments.
Military command could not promise he would never leave again.
Daniel promised only that Emma would never be left with one adult controlling every call, account, and decision.
A week later, the prosecutor received a recorded call from Laura.
She had contacted an unknown prepaid number from jail.
“The Sarah box is gone,” Laura said.
A man answered:
“Then use the daughter’s letter.”
Laura replied:
“Daniel won’t open it.”
“He doesn’t have to. Emma will.”
The call ended before the number could be traced.
Laura had an outside contact.
But the voice belonged to no bank employee, attorney, or relative identified in the case.
Grace inspected Emma’s sealed envelope without opening it.
The outer edge had been cut and resealed recently.
