Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN IN SARAH’S PHOTOGRAPH
Daniel studied the photograph until the details became painful.
Sarah stood outside a café in Columbus. Her hair was shorter than he remembered from their marriage. Laura stood beside her with one arm around her shoulder.
Both women were smiling.
A handwritten date on the back placed the photograph five years before Daniel met Laura.
Beneath the date, Sarah had written:
Laura — never again after today.
Daniel brought the photograph to Emma’s hospital room.
He did not show it immediately.
Grace advised waiting until they understood more.
Detective Maya searched Sarah’s old email archives under a court order. Most accounts had been closed after her death, but a cloud backup remained linked to the trust.
Laura’s name appeared in dozens of messages.
They had attended college together.
For several years, they were close friends.
Then Sarah accused Laura of stealing money from a shared nonprofit account.
No criminal case was filed. Sarah repaid the missing funds personally to protect other volunteers and ended the friendship.
In one email, Laura wrote:
You always had money to rescue everyone. One day you will learn how it feels when no one rescues you.
Sarah never responded.
Daniel had known Sarah experienced a friendship betrayal before they met. She refused to discuss details, saying only that someone she trusted had taught her to protect every account.
That experience may have influenced the structure of Emma’s trust.
Laura knew the safeguards because Sarah once described them.
Years later, after Sarah died, Laura approached Daniel at a military-family charity event.
She said she recognized him from local news coverage of his unit.
She never mentioned Sarah.
The meeting had not been accidental.
Laura chose a place where Daniel attended with Emma.
She began by offering help with childcare.
The pattern was now obvious.
She entered the family through their grief.
Daniel returned to Laura’s recorded interview.
“Why did you lie about knowing Sarah?” Maya asked.
Laura’s attorney advised silence.
Laura ignored him.
“Because Daniel would never have trusted me if he knew.”
“Why approach him at all?”
“I cared about Emma.”
“You attempted to kill her.”
Laura’s face changed.
“I did not intend for the bag to stay sealed.”
“You injected her with a sedative.”
“She was screaming.”
“You left her beside a garbage collection route.”
“I panicked.”
“You inspected that alley weeks earlier.”
Laura stopped answering.
Maya placed the photograph on the table.
“What happened between you and Sarah?”
“She made me look like a criminal.”
“You stole money.”
“She had more than enough.”
The same reasoning appeared again.
Sarah had enough.
Emma had millions.
Daniel had military benefits.
Laura treated other people’s property as available because she believed their security insulted her need.
Forensics strengthened the attempted-murder case.
The bag had been tied with two knots from the outside. Small ventilation holes near Emma’s face had been covered with clear packing tape after she began moving.
Laura did not merely abandon her.
She tried to stop her from breathing long enough to call for help.
The remaining black bags in the garage carried the same tape.
Green paint on Laura’s steering wheel matched the spill from the kitchen.
The evidence no longer depended only on Emma’s account.
Laura’s attorney began exploring a plea.
Laura refused.
She still believed Daniel could be destabilized through Sarah.
Before the interrogation ended, she said one thing directly toward the camera.
“Ask Mr. Keller why Sarah visited his junkyard before she died.”
Daniel called the elderly owner.
Mr. Keller became quiet.
“I was hoping the past would stay buried.”
“What past?”
“Sarah brought me a metal box.”
“When?”
“Three days before her accident.”
“Where is it?”
Mr. Keller looked toward the rows of crushed vehicles beyond his office window.
