The Baby Was Afraid of Someone / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - FLORENCE’S LAST SECRET Florence denied continued cooperation.

Then Ortiz showed her a transfer deposited into a hidden account two days after Hannah’s birth.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

The sender was NurtureTrack.

Florence closed her eyes.

Lauren felt the truth before hearing it.

“You were paid.”

“I returned most of it.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Florence admitted that Brandon asked her to participate in a home-observation program. Her role was to provide consistent daytime care and record Hannah’s feeding, crying, and sleep.

He said the money would help pay Lauren’s maternity expenses.

Florence accepted.

At first, the instructions were ordinary.

Then the application began telling her which shirt to wear, which songs to play, and how long to wait before comforting Hannah.

She obeyed because each task seemed harmless alone.

When Brandon began administering drops, Florence suspected the program had changed.

She kept participating long enough to understand what he was doing.

“Did Vale contact you after the hospital?” Lauren asked.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Vale called from an unknown number and warned that Ava would die unless Florence stayed near Hannah and reported police movements.

Florence sent three messages.

Hospital room number.

Security shift change.

The time Lauren left to speak with Ortiz.

Those details allowed Rebecca Sloan to enter the corridor.

“You gave them access to her again,” Lauren whispered.

“I thought I was protecting the other baby.”

“You chose which child to risk.”

Florence began crying.

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

“You tell the police. You tell me. You stop deciding alone.”

Florence’s cooperation helped locate Ava, but it also prolonged NurtureTrack’s reach.

Ortiz placed her under arrest for obstruction and unauthorized disclosure of protected medical information.

Lauren watched officers lead her away.

Hannah began crying the moment Florence disappeared.

The baby had been conditioned to treat Florence as safety. Removing her caused distress even after the betrayal.

That was NurtureTrack’s cruelest achievement.

It turned attachment itself into evidence.

Ava was reunited with her parents under medical supervision. Their relief became rage when they learned the hospital had certified her death.

Melissa agreed to testify against Vale and Bell.

Brandon’s attorney began negotiating a plea.

Dr. Lawson remained suspended but not charged.

The desert property yielded a laptop containing the next stage of Hannah’s protocol.

Phase Two: caregiver removal and maternal dependency.

The plan predicted that once Brandon and Florence were removed, Lauren would become isolated, exhausted, and willing to accept professional support.

The recommended professional was Dr. Lawson.

Lauren stared at his name.

NurtureTrack expected him to become the only adult she trusted.

He insisted the file had been created to frame him.

Ortiz asked whether he had ever received payments from Meridian Pediatric Technologies, NurtureTrack’s parent company.

He admitted consulting for them years earlier.

“How much?” Lauren asked.

“Eighty thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“Clinical design.”

The original study’s fear-response measures had been based partly on Dr. Lawson’s research.

He had not invented the abuse, but he had built the scale used to quantify it.

Nathan Bell and Miriam Vale later turned his work into a reward system for caregivers.

Dr. Lawson sat across from Lauren.

“I warned you because I recognized my own language in Hannah’s reaction.”

“You recognized what they had done because you helped teach them how to measure it.”

“Yes.”

His honesty arrived years too late.

Before Ortiz could question him further, the desert laptop began deleting files remotely.

The command came from inside the hospital network.

Someone physically connected to the pediatric floor had activated it.

Security footage showed a person entering the server room in Dr. Lawson’s white coat.
