Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE AIR VENT Police found the thirteenth camera inside an air-conditioning vent.
Unlike the others, it transmitted through a cellular connection and remained active after Brandon cut the household internet. It had recorded Lauren’s cameras being discovered, Florence’s resistance, Brandon taking Hannah, and the police search.
Someone outside the house had watched everything.
The device contained no fingerprints.
Its registration led to a medical-supply company owned by Nathan Bell.
Detective Ortiz traced Bell’s recent transactions to a rental home near Tempe. Police entered and found only computers, empty medicine cases, and a wall covered with infant profiles.
Hannah’s photograph occupied the center.
Beneath it were notes:
Primary handler: Brandon
Safety caregiver: Florence
Maternal interruption risk: high
Clinical observer: Lawson
Dr. Lawson denied being the clinical observer.
His hospital login had accessed Hannah’s NurtureTrack file eleven times before the pediatric appointment.
He said the access was impossible.
“I didn’t know the file existed.”
Ortiz showed him the server log.
“Someone used your credentials from inside your clinic.”
The pediatric office employed six nurses, three physicians, and a rotating technology contractor.
One contractor’s photograph matched Nathan Bell under a different name.
For five months, Bell had maintained the clinic’s network.
He could copy credentials, alter messages, and monitor which children entered examination rooms.
Dr. Lawson’s warning to Lauren may have exposed Hannah only because Bell wanted it to.
“What if he expected me to install cameras?” Lauren asked.
Ortiz understood.
The NurtureTrack profile required maternal interruption data. Lauren discovering the experiment created a new, high-intensity phase.
The confrontation, kidnapping, police chase, and hospitalization generated more valuable data than weeks of quiet dosing.
Even the investigation might be part of the study.
Police disconnected every known device associated with Hannah.
Within minutes, a message appeared on Lauren’s phone:
Signal loss confirmed. Maternal protective response entering escalation stage.
Lauren threw the phone onto the table.
“They’re still watching.”
Ortiz ordered her moved to a secure location inside the hospital. Hannah’s room changed. Staff access was restricted. Every bottle came sealed directly from the hospital pharmacy.
Florence remained under supervision.
Daniel—no, Brandon—remained in custody.
Dr. Lawson’s access was suspended.
For the first time, the system seemed isolated.
Then the hospital monitor beside Hannah’s bed began playing a low electronic tone.
The same tone Brandon used in the nursery recordings.
Hannah’s eyes opened.
Her fists clenched.
Lauren ripped the power cord from the wall, but the tone continued through the backup battery.
A nurse removed the monitor entirely.
Dr. Lawson stared from the doorway.
“That sound is stored in NurtureTrack’s response files.”
“How did it reach the hospital?”
No one knew.
Hannah’s heart rate began climbing.
Lauren wrapped her in the blanket and covered her ears.
The baby slowly calmed.
On the disconnected screen, one final message appeared:
Primary caregiver can interrupt conditioning. Begin transfer protocol.
The security alarm sounded outside the room.
Someone had used Lauren’s identification badge to enter the maternity corridor.
