The Baby Was Afraid of Someone / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - WHEN HANNAH FEARED HER MOTHER Lauren stopped speaking.

The reaction had begun when she leaned over the crib and whispered Hannah’s name. The baby stiffened, clenched her fists, and turned away with the same terror she once showed Brandon.

Lauren backed into the wall.

“No,” she whispered.

Hannah screamed harder.

A pediatric trauma specialist examined the baby and found no new drugs in her blood. Her response appeared linked to sound.

Detective Ortiz reviewed everything that had played inside the safe house.

Television remained off.

No phones were permitted.

Agents spoke quietly.

Then they found the source.

The ventilation system produced a nearly inaudible frequency whenever Lauren’s bedroom door opened. A small device had been installed inside the air duct before she arrived.

It played the tone beneath recordings of Lauren’s voice captured from earlier monitoring feeds.

Vale had paired maternal speech with discomfort remotely.

The safe house itself had been compromised before Lauren entered.

Only federal personnel knew the address.

Ortiz detained the building supervisor and every member of the transport team. None admitted involvement.

The device’s casing came from Dr. Lawson’s clinic.

Again, evidence pointed toward him.

He requested to speak with Lauren by secure video.

“I need you to test something.”

“I’m not using my daughter for another experiment.”

“Not Hannah. The audio.”

Lawson separated Lauren’s recorded voice from the hidden tone. When the tone played alone, Hannah reacted. When Lauren spoke without it, the baby remained tense but did not panic.

Vale had not made Hannah afraid of her mother permanently.

She had created another association.

With careful treatment, it could be undone.

Lauren sat beside the crib and spoke softly while specialists played neutral background sounds.

Hannah cried for several minutes.

Then she looked toward Lauren.

Her fingers slowly opened.

Lauren began weeping.

She did not touch the baby until Hannah reached first.

The moment felt like a victory.

Ortiz did not let it distract her from the breach.

The device had been activated through a short-range signal from a neighboring property. Agents searched an empty rental house across the road.

Inside, they found surveillance equipment, food wrappers, and photographs taken through the safe-house windows.

Miriam Vale had been watching for at least two days.

She escaped minutes before the search.

A paper calendar remained on the wall.

Each day contained notes on Lauren’s sleep, feeding routines, and emotional reactions.

The final entry read:

Maternal bond resilient. Secondary separation required.

Beneath it was a photograph of Dr. Lawson’s wife and teenage son.

Vale had shifted targets.

Police contacted Lawson.

His wife answered the phone.

She said Lucas had just left the house after receiving a message from Lauren requesting an emergency meeting.

Lauren had sent nothing.

Lawson’s car was found near the desert highway with the driver’s door open.

Blood marked the steering wheel.

A voice recorder on the seat contained Miriam Vale’s message:
