PART 5

Eleanor attended the wedding anyway.

That was what people later could not understand.

Why go?

Why sit there?

Why watch your son marry a woman trying to take your home?

The answer was simple and painful.

Because Andrew was still her son.

Because mothers sometimes arrive even when love has been made into a weapon.

Because Eleanor wanted to give him one last chance to stop.

The ceremony was beautiful.

That almost made it worse.

White roses.

String quartet.

Sunlight through cathedral glass.

Andrew looked handsome.

Nervous.

Younger than thirty-two when he saw Eleanor in the second row.

For one second, his face softened.

Eleanor thought maybe.

Maybe he would remember the woman who drove him to school during storms.

Maybe he would remember his father teaching him to fish at Hawthorne Lake.

Maybe he would remember that a home is not empty just because one person lives in it.

Then Vanessa reached the altar.

Andrew looked at her.

And the softness vanished.

At the reception, Eleanor was seated near the kitchen doors, exactly as the chart promised.

Grace Holloway sat beside her as her guest.

Not as attorney, officially.

As a friend.

Unofficially, she had her phone open and the sheriff’s non-emergency number ready.

The first hour passed with champagne and speeches.

Then Vanessa took the microphone.

She glowed beneath the chandelier.

“My new husband and I believe marriage is about building a future.”

Applause.

“And sometimes, building a future means helping older generations transition with grace.”

Eleanor felt Grace’s hand still beside her.

Vanessa continued.

“Andrew’s mother has lived alone in that big old estate for years.”

A murmur passed through the room.

“She deserves something simpler.”

Andrew looked pale.

But he did not stop her.

Vanessa smiled wider.

“So as my first act as Mrs. Whitfield, I want everyone to know I’ll allow your mother to live in my old apartment.”

The ballroom laughed politely at first.

Then Eleanor lifted her eyes.

The laughter died.

“I already have a home.”

Andrew stepped forward.

“Mom.”

His voice cracked.

“My in-laws are moving into your estate.”

Grace’s phone buzzed.

So did Eleanor’s.

The security alert flashed across the screen.

Moving truck at east gate.

Access code accepted.

Eleanor looked at Andrew.

“You gave them a gate code.”

May you like

His face said yes before his mouth could lie.
