PART 6
Security footage appeared on Eleanor’s phone in real time.
The ballroom blurred around her.
On the screen, a white moving truck rolled through the east gate of Hawthorne Hill.
Two men jumped out.
Then Martin Caldwell stepped into frame, still wearing his wedding suit with his bow tie undone.
He pointed toward the guest wing entrance.
Beatrice followed with a clipboard.
Not frightened.
Not confused.
Organized.
Eleanor watched strangers carry boxes toward her home.
Her home.
The foyer where Andrew took his first steps.
The piano room where her husband proposed again on their twentieth anniversary.
The east wing where Helen, the housekeeper, kept fresh sheets because Eleanor still hosted old friends from the hospital charity board.
Now Beatrice Caldwell stood at that door with a key Andrew had no right to give.
Grace leaned toward Eleanor.
“Say it clearly.”
Eleanor stood.
Every guest turned.
Vanessa’s smile faltered.
Eleanor’s voice carried across the ballroom.
“Security, call the sheriff.”
Vanessa lunged forward.
“You can’t do that!”
Eleanor looked at the hotel security staff near the entrance.
“Also detain any member of the Caldwell family attempting to leave before officers speak with them.”
Martin’s brother, seated near the bar, stood.
Grace rose beside Eleanor.
“I would sit down.”
He looked at her.
“Who are you?”
“Her attorney.”
That changed the room.
Guests began whispering.
Andrew reached for the microphone.
“Everyone calm down.”
Eleanor turned on him.
“You gave strangers access to my property during your wedding reception.”
“They’re not strangers.”
“They are trespassers.”
“They’re my in-laws.”
“They are still trespassers.”
His face flushed.
“Mom, it was supposed to be a transition.”
Eleanor’s voice dropped.
“From me to whom?”
Andrew did not answer.
Vanessa did.
“To family.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“You married my son four hours ago.”
“You are not the heir to my locks.”
A guest near the center table gasped.
Someone else whispered, “Oh my God.”
The band members quietly set down their instruments.
Grace made the call.
“Yes, Sheriff’s Department.”
“This is Grace Holloway.”
“We have an active trespass at Hawthorne Hill Estate and possible unlawful entry coordinated during a wedding reception.”
Vanessa went white.
Andrew looked like he might be sick.
And Eleanor finally understood the worst part.
Her son was not surprised.
May you like
He was only embarrassed they had been caught.
