part 8

PART 8
Andrew tried to explain.
That was painful to watch.
Not because he was convincing.
Because he still believed explanation could soften betrayal.
“I didn’t sell anything.”
Eleanor said nothing.
“I thought it would make things easier after.”
“After what?”
He swallowed.
“After you eventually downsized.”
Grace closed her eyes.
Vanessa stepped in.
“She was going to move eventually.”
Eleanor turned.
“Was I?”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“You don’t need forty acres.”
“I do not need your permission either.”
Patricia, one of Eleanor’s oldest friends, stood from a nearby table.
“Eleanor, would you like me to call the board?”
Vanessa blinked.
“What board?”
Eleanor looked at Andrew.
He knew.
That was why he went paler.
Grace answered.
“The Hawthorne Preservation Trust board.”
“The estate is not simply private property.”
“It is held under a protected family preservation trust controlled by Eleanor Whitfield.”
“Unauthorized occupancy can trigger criminal trespass and civil penalties.”
Vanessa stared.
Andrew whispered, “Mom, don’t bring the trust into this.”
Eleanor almost laughed.
“You brought movers into it.”
Grace continued.
“Andrew is not a trustee.”
“He is not a beneficiary with present rights.”
“He has no power to assign access, residence, lease, transfer, or occupancy.”
The room was silent.
Vanessa looked at Andrew.
“You said you were the heir.”
Andrew looked down.
Eleanor felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
“He may inherit someday.”
Her voice was quiet.
“If he remains worthy of inheriting anything.”
Andrew looked up sharply.
“Mom.”
Eleanor held his gaze.
“You treated my life as a waiting room for your entitlement.”
Vanessa grabbed Andrew’s arm.
“You told me she understood.”
Eleanor’s eyes moved to Vanessa’s hand.
“No.”
“He told you I could be managed.”
Vanessa flushed.
That was answer enough.
The hotel security manager approached Eleanor.
“Ma’am, deputies have secured the estate.”
“Would you like any family members here restricted from leaving?”
Eleanor looked at Vanessa.
Then Andrew.
Then the Caldwell relatives who were trying very hard not to be seen.
“No.”
She paused.
“Let them leave.”
Andrew exhaled.
Then Eleanor added, “After the sheriff takes statements.”
May you like
The exhale died.
